Yes, happened to a friend of mine. Brain lapse. Ended up towing his Samari with the transmission left in 2nd gear. Was having trouble keeping his speed up to 55mph for about 10 miles and untill a motorist flagged him down. Raw gas was dripping out the tail pipe (carbed model).
He had the oil changed before he started it up and seems he got off lucky with no apparent damage. I was surprised the engine didn't blow up.

Appreciate the replies. Have been driving this vehicle for many years and guess i never paid much attention to the transfer case lever. It has 4 settings - 2H (which i drive in 99.9% of the time), 4H (used rarely when driving on snow/ice), N and 4L (never used).

So from what I'm hearing to tow, I use neutral for the transfer case and put the manual shift in first or other gear.

Is there a reason to leave the manual transmission in a gear? My guess would have been to leave it in neutral.

I towed one. transfer case in neutral and gear shift in a gear. think the book used to say 1st gear but a higher gear works just as well.

Also leave the transmission in gear- all you need is the transfer case in Neutral- an aux braking solution is a good idea too. Cherokee's weight 3500lbs

I have a 2000 Cherokee 4x4 auto that I tow, just put the T-case in "N" and you are go to go.

Thanks everybody for the info so far. I don't have an owners manual. When I called Jeep that's the first thing they told me to do. I think i'm good to go - just want to be sure before I invest in a tow bar etc.
