2007 (Gen 3) CRV - Brake and small gravel/rocks

Just info sharing on a new one to us. We have a 2007 CRV toad, with about 45K of being towed.

We're on a Retirement Victory Tour to Alaska, and have traveled some dirt/gravel/rocky roads on this journey.

We started to hear a metal 'twang' like sound from the front left suspension area, after a extremely long day of rough/construction/gravel/rocky roads.

I inspected everything I knew how to check, and everything looked good to my eyes. So, I made an appointment at a Yukon Whitehorse Honda Dealer, to have them inspect to see what I missed.

Service Manager listened to me when I got to them, said he'd have his tech look it over to be sure, but said it was probably a piece of rock/gravel that got caught between the disc brake and the backing plate.

45 mins later, tech came in and said that is what it was.

I had never heard of this, so thought I would share for other CRV owners of this era. Tech and Service Manager said they do 2-3 cars per week for just this problem. Mostly Civics, with the CRV's coming in second as far as volume.

He said one other tip, that we did not hear, is to roll down the front windows, and drive slow and listen for a rock/gravel tumbling rattle sound. He said not always, but quite often this will be heard. On the larger rocks/gravels, they don't tumble, and you only hear them as they 'twang' release as tension as they move in the back plate.

If this is old news to you who travel in gravel/rocky areas, great. We've had this CRV off road on some pretty rough roads before - so it was not the first time it had been exposed to gravel/rocks...

Oh, on a side note. Yep, the CRV remains a great toad, and has been very dependable for us as our second car too.

Best to all, be safe, have fun,
Smitty
  • I saw this a lot when I worked at a Honda shop, and also when I was at a Chevrolet shop. Pretty common, I think, any vehicle, any where. Not common to you, I mean, but to shops.
