2014 Sequoia Brake Controller Recommendation

The Curt Spectrum has been recorded to me to tow my Rockwood 23 ft trailer. Any thoughts?
  • get a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 or P3. way better reputation than Curt.
  • Curt Spectrum: It's new. I like the smaller override knob that might be less obtrusive than the 1-box solutions depending on exact vehicle dashboard/footwell designs.

But I'd just get the Tekonsha P2 or P3. I had an earlier generation Prodigy. The company has been making the best brake controllers for a couple decades. They just work, very well, and for less money than the new Curt Spectrum. If you get the vehicle specific harness, it will take longer to mount the controller than plug in and set up.
  • Yep, Tekonsha has served me well.

I had a Voyager that was awesome. You have to set the level yourself but it was very easy to do. Mine was set and forget. I always set my trailer brakes a little aggressive.

I later got a Prodigy with the boost feature which sends a boost of power to the trailer brakes to make the trailer lead the TV when braking (very solid braking). Sweet brake controller but you only get three boost options. Better than the Voyager on paper but not like quantum shift better. The Prodigy has a digital read out and self leveling.

The Voyager had a pendulum dial on one side to set the level and a power dial on the other to adjust the power going to the trailer brakes. It only has a small led that goes from green when connected to the trailer and not braking to yellow for easy braking to red when heavy braking.

I like the LED better because it is a visual cue I can see that the brake controller is working out of my perephrial vision without taking my eyes off the road.

If my next TV needs a brake controller I would have no issues with either the Tekonsha Prodigy or Voyager. Both are really good proportional brake controllers. Just read the instructions on set up for any you get.

I personally will not buy anything but Tekonsha...JMHO

    Thanks!

x3 on the Prodigy recommendation and get the Tekonsha pigtail for Toyota and the install is simple plug and play. Had one on both my Tundras.
  • Similar to the Spetrum is the Redarc. Smaller, less intrusive knob. Im considering replacing my P2 with the Redarc.

    Ditto.

Tekonsha is the go-to brand for brake controllers. They've been around forever.
