A Good Weekend

Just thought you would like to know:

Many post about how they never camp on long weekends because of all the problems. I can understand that. However, I want campers to know that not ALL parks are like that.

We just completed our long Labor Day weekend as campground hosts at a 77 site campground. It was completely full with no sites left vacant.

Friday evening was set up time for lots of campers. Outdoor cooking and listening to music at a low level. Campfires all glowing in the proper fire ring. Each site has electric and water so no generators were heard.

Dogs all walked on a leash and everyone seemed to pick up.

Saturday evening we had our second annual sidewalk chalk coloring contest. Artists included ages 4 to over 40. Great fun was had by all. Small trophies for first place, ribbons for second and third. All children received a prize bag.

Troubles: One golf cart full of children, being operated by a child, was “joy riding” and needed to be stopped. (Golf cart use here is allowed only by disabled folks) Sunday morning there was a traffic jam at the dump station, as many campers decided to leave at the same time.

I, for one, and hope our campers, will look back on this weekend as a “good one.”
  • Tongue in cheek response:

When I arrived at the campground, there was only one site left, and it wasn't the one I had reserved. The campground host looked at me funny when I mentioned it.

While I was setting up, the campers next to me were playing country music - I hate country music, and I couldn't hear myself think. Then, they started a dog gone bonfire with green wood. The smoke was very obnoxious, and it was going right into our RV. I had to close up the entire RV to keep the stench out. We'll have to have our clothes dry cleaned because they reek.

Then the next door campers left their dog tied up on a leash and it barked for hours on end. When they would walk it, they wouldn't pick up after it, so I did it while giving them a cold hard stare.

Then, somebody had the brilliant idea of having a sidewalk chalk coloring contest. The DW was walking to the restroom (which was filthy by the way) and some $#%m kid left a piece of chalk on the sidewalk. The DW slipped on the chalk and bruised her hip.

On Friday night, all day Saturday and Sunday morning, somebody's kids kept riding around on a golf cart. Finally on Sunday morning, the campground host asked them to stop. Jeesh - What took so long.

What a horrid trip. I'll never camp again on a holiday weekend.

    (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

  • I guess it is all how you look at it! :)

So you were the one in the Grand Design that complained about it straight for 20 minutes when we asked. :)

Besides, that piece of chalk was not that big.

Yep - And did you like my icy stare?

LOL. Sounds like a great time was had by all.

  • Perspective....sometimes/always a good thing. :B

My friend had a not-so-good weekend. He had to go home early from his camping trip. Bummer.

He called me to offer his site for the last night of the holiday weekend though. Un-bummer!

Camp Hosts were okay with the "substitution".

Maybe people are hitting an "end of summer mellow-out" phase.
  • Thanks for sharing. It is too often the negatives that get all the attention.
  • I had a perfectly pleasant weekend at my favorite CG where everyone was respectful and well behaved.
  • We had a good time at Hersheypark Camping Resort. Made reservations a few weeks ahead, checked in late Thursday afternoon. Son and DIL arrived just a couple hours later. Any empty sites were filled by Friday evening. We spent two exhausting, but enjoyable days in Hershey Park. We checked out Sunday because our DIL was scheduled to be "on call" with her hospital OR job on Monday. Some loud music and noisy, screaming kids, but again, we were exhausted. We had a great time as a family, helped a less-experienced neighbor back in and set up, and perhaps learned to tolerate the "different" life/camping practices of others.
