- BearfootjExplorerI appreciate everyone's comments.
I found out today that the street legal ATB (oreion reeper) I was thinking of purchasing and trailering is extremely hard to get insured for on road use. Two companies will insure them for $1K+ per year. Does not make sense for a part time driver behind a motorhome.
I believe we will switch gears and look for a mid-90's Geo Tracker or Suzuki SideKick to Dinghy tow. The weight looks well within acceptable limits (close to what I was looking at for the other) and will mean a lot less green out of the pocket for both the vehicle and insurance.
Now just have to find a 4x4 one in really good condition. Thanks again for all the comments. - wanderingbobExplorer IIFor 126,000 miles we pulled a cargo trailer weighing with contents a little over 4K with our 2004 Sprinter Itasca, 5 cylinder engine . . No problem . We work craft shows all thru the south including mountains in the Carolinas . We would still be driving it except it got struck by lightning . Also a friend hauls a 24 foot trailer that he sells redneck belts out of with a 2003 Sprinter . The towing capacity that is written on the wall would not support these weights but It does not seem to hurt the sprinter . If you should have a serious accident a jury of your peers might have a problem with the over weight .
- GdetrailerExplorer IIII think you already know the answer and have made up your mind.
Just because your HITCH states 3500 lbs doesn't mean you HAVE 3500 lbs available to tow.
You need to weigh your rig loaded then subtract the loaded weight from your GVWR.
I suspect you will find that you have LESS left over cargo weight than you think.
To put that into perspective, your TONGUE weight will need to be accounted for in the CARGO weight of your rig.
2200 lb trailer and cargo on that trailer MUST have a minimum of 220 lbs on the tongue (10%)up to 15% (330 lbs).
The problem you will run into with open cargo trailers and vehicles on said trailer is getting the tongue weight correct..
If you don't get the vehicle in the correct place on the trailer and look out you will have a tiger behind you..
Get the vehicle to far forward and you will easily overload such a light duty hitch and over load your rig..
Your call.. - BigD629ExplorerShouldn't be a problem at all. we have a 30' class c and tow a Polaris RZR on a 16'(total with tongue)trailer. Don't even know its back there. Although were rated at 5000lbs.
- mockturtleExplorer IIYou can see by my signature that I tow a Honda CR-V with my 24' Class C. This has included many mountain roads and thousands of miles. Granted, my towing capacity is greater but my toad is heavier, too. No problems whatsoever with sway but I don't use a trailer.
- BearfootjExplorerThe total weight of the trailer + vehicle is 2,200 pounds.
The total length of the trailer (including tongue) is 15'.
The vehicle is possibly an Oreion Reeper (see posts under Dingy Towing) weighing 1,500 lbs.
The trailer will be between 600 - 700 lbs (all aluminum). - carringbExplorerWhat kind of car do you have that only weighs 2200 pounds?
I agree with Gdetrailer. By the time you add trailer weight, I think it it very unlikely you would be able to stay within 3500 pounds. - GdetrailerExplorer IIII think you will be overweight when considering the vehicle weight of 2200 lbs PLUS adding in the TRAILER WEIGHT which is most likely going to be more than 1000 lbs when empty (1400-1500 lbs per HERE ) for a 15ft car trailer..
Not to mention a 15ft DECK means the actual trailer length including the tongue will be about 21 ft! - BearfootjExplorerGVWR is 11,030
GCWR is 15,250
Hitch rating is 3,500
I believe I am fine with total weight. My main concern is the size of the trailer 15' long & 7.3' wide being pulled with 24' motorhome. Will I have major issues with swaying, and or control.
Dang ..... I am talking about a total length of 39' long. That's not going to be a lot of fun on winding roads, congested areas, or gas stations is it. - mockturtleExplorer IIWhat is your GCWR (gross combined weight rating)?
