Best Towable Waste Water Tote for Beach Camping

I have camped on the beach for quite a few years now and am now in the market for a towable waste water tote so that we can not worry so much about grey water level. I would welcome input on what models/designs are best for beach use. Where we camp is soft sand so the tote would need to be able to be towed thru such conditions.

Any and all input is appreciated.

Thanks.

Thanks. We have camped at Shag. I too have mixed feelings about it being on reservation system.

Btw, I was born and raised in Center Moriches. Moved to North Shore when I got married almost 25 years ago.

We camp at Montauk outter beach all summer. I have a big blue tote, and it is a beast to pull through the sand from the drain to the front of the trailer. The wheels do nothing in the sand of LI. Here is what I've found works well.

Leave the tote at the front of the camper. By a cap for your sewage pipe that has a garden hose attachment. Run a hose from the drain, downhill to your tote. Fill it up. Its way easier to hook the tote to your hitch when you only have to go 5' vs 25'! Also, you'll find that if you are backed into a dune, the tote on the ground next to drain, Will be almost as high as your drain. You'll have to do some digging.

Ever camp at MTK? Its on the reservation system now. Not sure how I feel about that. We've always enjoyed last minute trips to Montauk.

I hear ya! My wife has to have some things when "camping" too, but since our shower in the trailer is only good for storage, ain't no one taking a shower in our rig anyway! ๐Ÿ™‚

I grew up "dry" camping where you could use all the water you wanted... Catch was, you had to haul what you used in AND out of the RV.. Plus, we all had to pitch in for Mom! ๐Ÿ™‚

It was a great way to learn water conservation when needed.

If I want rustic I'll load up the pack and canoe and go interior camping, and then hey, won't even have a shower for 5 or so days. But DW INSISTS on a decent shower, cause, hey that's why we have the camper, so I oblige.

I measure 2-3g's per shower for a "decent" shower, DW insists on 5, so I make sure we have the capacity to do so.

What you guys do to take a shower is beyond me... I can completely clean myself with less than a gallon of hot water and be completely clean and then just toss that gallon of water in the dirt and not even worry about it... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Is it the same as a nice hot shower?? Of course NOT... But, that's not the point... I only "camp" so many days out of the year and live and work at HOME the rest of the time where I can take long and hot showers as I need.. ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, it's all about what "works for you", so if that's what "works for you" then there you go.. I like being a bit rustic and out of the norm when I'm "camping", because that's why I enjoy it so much... ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, I know this is not on topic with the question... But, I'm getting old and I can now say "back in the day"******and get away with it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Flojet and a 45 gallon collapsible tank.

I used a 30 gallon plastic drum ($10 surplus) cradled in an inverted cut-down shipping pallet (free). Gray water transfer was by a sewer cap with a garden hose nipple, some old garden hose, and Harbor Freight 12V marine pump.
This years mods will be a macerator pump and converting the barrel for a 1-1/2" RV dump valve. The dump hose will be a piece of 1-1/2" sump pump discharge hose.

Poop cannon to tank in the back of the sub. BTDT I have 40ft or 1 1/2 waste water hose to see the contents. The only difficult part is evacuating the full hose off the poop cannon. You are at a foot off the ground with 40 feet of sludge or gray angled up to the rear of the sub/truck. You take off the hose from cannon and raise immediately over your head. Walk the contents in the hose back to the sub/truck.

I fire up the little 1g compressor with about 40-60psi of pressure and blow the hose clean. Works like a charm!

I always just used a regular Barker 15 gallon Blue tote with the little plastic wheels. It mostly dragged thru the sand behind the truck, but didn't hurt it. once you got off the beach and on the asphalt the wheels would roll again so you didn't tear up the tank.

If you really want the wheels to roll, get a regular blue tote and replace the stock plastic wheels with larger pneumatic wheels from Harbor Freight. Don't forget to air them down!

Get a couple of fresh water carriers as well, Wal-Mart has 6-gal Aqua-tainers pretty cheap. This way you can dump the gray and bring back more fresh with one trip.

Buy what you want, take off the wheels(or not) and buy a Flojet.

I would probably buy an off the shelf waste water tote and fit it with oversized wheels and tires when headed for the beach. Then, remount the stock tires for other camping.
