Can a jeep Wrangler be towed on a dolly

Hello. I normally tow my chevy spark on a dolly but I am playing a trip where a jeep wrangler may be available to us to bring along. Has anyone ever towed one on a dolly.
  • Plain English,...4wd,....all wheels must be either turning, or standing still.
So flat tow,....or towing it on a flatbed trailer, probably won't hurt it too bad :)

If a Wrangler, such as mine for the last for years, can be towed four down with the rear drive line never removed, why would you have to remove it for a dolly?

Because of the transfer case, Bill. Towing 4 down has all 4 wheels turning at approximately the same rate. On a dolly, 2 of those wheels are not turning at all, and where the turning and not-turning drive shafts meet is in the transfer case.
  • The Owners Manual says "NO".
However, the correct answer is: It is your vehicle, do what you want. If it breaks, the warranty will not cover it.
    Good luck.
  • 2014 Wrangler, automatic transmission, 4WD - the owners manual states:

"Caution" "DO NOT dolly tow any 4WD vehicle. Internal damage to the transmission or transfer case will occur when a dolly is used when recreational towing."

Jeep defines "Recreational Towing" as "Recreational Towing BEHIND MOTORHOME, ETC".

The caps are like that in the manual.

It goes on to say that for Flat Tow: "not wheels off the ground"
Transmission is in Park for automatic, for Manual transmission it must be in gear
    Transfer case is in Neutral
Tow in a forward direction only

    Hope this helps
  • I don't have a Wrangler, but my Jeep Cherokee which should have the same drive train states "For recreational towing, the front or rear wheels should not be off the ground. Damage to the transfer will occur".
I take that to mean that it can not be towed on a dolly.

  • I would say it depends on the type of transmission (auto, 4wd/2wd). If it can be towed four wheels down, you should be able to tow on a dolly. Look in the owner's manual to see what it says about towing.

  • Not if it is a 4X4. I think to tow a 4X4 on a dolly you would need to remove the rear driveshaft. Dick
