Chevrolet HHR toad exhaust leak

If you have a Chevy HHR that you use for your toad, and have noticed the exhaust getting a little louder, you may have a failure with the flex joint. This is a well known issue with this model and a few other similar autos that use a flex joint. On the HHR, the flex joint looks like an accordion bellows, made out of thin sheet metal. The flexing eventually causes it to break, and leak.
There are many after market companies that make a different design flex joint to fix the problem with a little cutting and welding.
The thing is that this flex joint is part of the emissions warranty items and it is covered by an 8 year, 80,000 mile warranty.
I just had mine replaced for free at the dealer on my 2009 HHR, as opposed to a charge in excess of $400 if you take it to a shop for repair, or if it is already out of warranty.

Excellent advice. Thanks for the heads up about the warranty angle. Covered under warranty is always good to hear...exhaust leaks are dangerous too, especially in cold weather.....Dennis
