Class A RV One-Way from Coast to Coast (May-June 2015)

My friends and I decided to implement a bucket list wish of an RV cross-country trip from coast to coast. My friends are coming from Europe, and that part has already been arranged. Disregard for now an otherwise valid argument of whether it's the best/most economical way to see the U.S.A. To set the mood and lock in the rates (also to insure against "cold feet"), we went ahead and booked a class "A" RV here in New York based on a round trip. Half way through the itinerary planning, we realized we can't possibly do everything in the allotted time, so it must be a one-way trip. Well, the RV company didn't think so, and politely suggested that we must return it to the place we rented it from. I inquired about any possible one-way scenarios, but got a polite "Nope". They did, however, agree to give us an additional up to two weeks to bring it back, but none of us is available for those additional days.

Which brings me to THE question: what do I do? We want to see all the good stuff we planned on both coasts, and simply won't have time to drive back. How do we find someone who wants the same thing (only in reverse) but may have gotten the same "Nope" on their end in SF or LA. Seems like there has to be a way in this day and age, yet I've hit a brick wall. To simplify the inquiry: No, the trip cannot be canceled, and No, it cannot be extended.

In summary, how do I find anyone who would agree to drive a fully insured class "A" RV from either SF or LA to NY between May 11 and June 1, hopefully splitting with us the mileage and daily rental expenses.
  • That's a long shot in the dark to match that up. Maybe instead of coast to coast, just do one coast, NY to Key west! Good luck. Sounds exciting and fun to share a trip like that with friends
  • Last summer while camping in RMNP I met a neighbor camping family who has on several occasions picked up a new Class C at the factory and was enroute to taking it to Utah. While doing so them were given a number of days to accomplish this delevery. They said it cost them like $35.00 per day and all fuel was paid for. This may not meet your needs but it sounds like an inexpensive way to see the country.
  • I would worry about liability more than anything else with strangers sharing the rental. Who is responsible if something happens on the way back and you are not in the RV?
I would shorten the trip, and return the RV.
Give us the exact dates and perhaps we can help with the route and itinerary so you can see as much as possible?
  • Look into hiring a professional driver to return the coach for you. It might be the way to go. They will be bonded and insured. My son bought a coach over the internet from back east and paid a professional driver to deliver it to Washington state. Worked out good for him. Contact some of the major RV dealers where you want to end up and find out if they have delivery drivers making deliveries from the East who would be looking to get paid for a return trip rather than having to fly back.
  • Better check with the RV Rental. I doubt that they would allow this even if you could find someone to drive it back.
Things may have changed over the years, but years back, the rental was assigned to one licensed driver.
  • I think you have posted this in the wrong forum. This "coast to coast" is for the member camping resorts that are in the "Coast to Coast" network. Maybe move it to general camping issues forum.
