Yellowstone Late May to Mid June

I have a friend arriving from Europe around the 22 of May and would like to visit Yellowstone. Is that too early?
  • Anytime is a good time at Yellowstone! Spring time brings out lots of babies.
What is open gets a little dicier.
    Weather can be almost anything!
  • We went the first week of June several years ago. We had one day that the park was basically shut down due to a snow storm, but other than that it was great.

We are going that same week this year.
  • If the south entrance is open, go either into or out of Yellowstone that direction. Your friend will not fail to be impressed by the views of the Tetons from Jackson Lake and Jenny Lake. If you go out that way, you can head back to Nebraska on US 26 to I-25 at Casper or take US 287 down to I-80.
  • I was there June 19, 2011. They had gotten a snowstorm the night before. Also, the snowbanks on the side of the road were twice the height of my car.
  • We were there in mid May of 2016. South entrance was closed when we got there but opened before we left. The temperatures were high 50's to low 60's during the day. It got into the high 30's at night. It rained one night. No snow and the crowds were very light. Not everything was open but there's enough that you won't be dissipointed. We saw a mother grizzly and 3 cubs on the road between Norris and Canyon.
  • Lots of snow in Yellowstone & the Tetons this year - about 175 to 180% of normal. Might be all gone if we get some very warm periods between now and then. It has been snowing for most of the last week. Most years it would be ok, but at that time of the year, you never know. I would check the Yellowstone website and the long term weather forecast about a week out from your planned trip.
  • Well, I would suggest that you go ahead, just be aware that it could snow and be a little cool in the evenings. At the very least come in from the south entrance, after going through Grand Teton National Park, and then have a good time. Lodging might be a problem, but with advance planning you should be ok. Be flexible, if a road you want to travel is not open, others will be. If you get up to the north part of the Park, things should be good for you as that end of the Park is open year-round for highway travel. On the way through Grand Teton you will have a great chance to see wildlife, especially early in the morning and in the evening. As well, you will probably see wildlife on the way from Grand Teton to Yellowstone as well, just keep your eyes open. Take a shot and have a great time.
