Dashcam, Yes or No?

Just wondering how many RVers have invested in one? Seems that with the cost of an RV the expense of a dashcam is pocket change. Not only will it capture that unexpected scenery and wildlife, it also can be invaluable evidence should you be involved in an accident. Guess they are quite the rage in Europe, but not so much here yet.
  • I think it's a good idea for many reasons. I wouldn't be surprised to see them as standard equipment in a few years, just like back-up cameras.
  • I don't have one but, plan to install on on our Southwind. I think it would be beneficial.
We were almost hit head on a few years ago while traveling in the motorhome.
I would like to see a rerun of that incident. :E
  • You are right it is chump change compared to the cost of a RV and is quite nice to have.

That being said, I just returned from a long trip and used mine...But not all the time.

It was mounted in the window above the cab, thus keeping the dash clear and turned on remotely at select times, like when going thru the Redwoods and in to the Campgrounds there.

Also going across the Golden Gate Bridge and other interesting sights then downloaded to my laptop each day.

After returning home it was edited to a really neat travel log.

It takes some practice but it is fun. We did capture some unexpected things too.

It added to the experience and wasn't a big bother.

I agree...we try to keep it simple..this is another gadget that we have been told that we have to have. It turns out to be another something to maintain, fiddle with, repair, adjust, whatever.

After awhile, all this stuff piles up and starts to own us.
  • There's enough stuff to deal with while driving. I don't want anything else on my dash distracting me or obstructing my view. Can be used to your benefit in the case of an accident but can also be used against you.
  • The only dashcam that a LEO needs to worry about is his own. When he pulls you over, he pulls in behind you. He is invisable to your dashcam. He walks up to your door and he is still invisable. He has your infraction on his dashcam, no matter what you say your dashcam will show.
  • I heard they were very popular in Russia because of the horrible drivers. The LEO's in the states sure don't like them. :)
