Factory brake controller

Silverado is 1 year old with 20k. No probs until returning from last trip. "Check trailer wiring' message comes up on display. So far I have dismantled and cleaned grounds on trl and visually checked wiring. Dealer installed new 7 pin plug on truck as "old" one was corroded and vehicle tested OK. still no brakes on trl. Checked voltage output between brake pin and ground and reads 0.71V. Nothing further happens when foot brake applied or manually applied brake controller. System was acting strange on return from last trip in that the coloured bar display, to show how hard you are applying brake, would work and 5 seconds later not work. Brakes would then work again if manually applied and 5 seconds later not work. Now nothing is working at all. What gives? I know what I think is wrong but dealer tells me truck is OK. Heres the kicker. Borrowed Service Advisor's truck while Chev looked at. Its a Ford F150 and the trailer brakes worked fine when I plugged trl into it. Guess solution is to trade for a Ford!! What are the opinions out there as to next step???
  • Sounds like one of the brake wires on the trailer has a chafe spot that is causing a intermittent short to ground. 2 most common places to look are in the hubs by the magnets and inside the axle tubes.
Wire with rub and arcing spots inside the axle tube is pretty common as wire is no bigger than speaker wire and all of the rust inside the axle tube is abrasive. I fixed that issue on 2 of my past trailers by just splicing in new wire and zip tying securely to outside of axle tube. Randu
