First trip Calgary to Phoenix - advice needed

We're fairly new to rv'ing, and will be towing our new travel trailer (35') to Arizona from Calgary within the next month or so (Sept/Oct 2014). We're planning on taking Interstate 15, to Salt Lake City, and then over to Las Vegas, then down to Phoenix. We've never taken this route.

Some advice from those who have traveled this route would really be appreciated. We're wondering about:
1. WhenWhen we should leave, so that there's a reasonable chance of avoiding snow and wintery conditions. (Understood that weather's never a sure thing, but we'd like to minimize the odds of having to pull the trailer in snow.
2. The I-15 itself - is it a good route? mountain passes? better to go over to Las Vegas than continuing through the mountains of Utah?

Again, any advice would be appreciated
  • Thanks for the comments and advice! Very helpful for our planning.
  • I've made a similar trip a dozen times. TucsonJim is correct. The route over SR20 and then down US89 is our preferred route, unless snow is predicted. Then it's 15 to Vegas and 93. Lots more traffic that way.

Weather Channel is your friend. Bad weather is possible but not likely in Sept-Oct.

There's no avoiding Salt Lake City -- it's 80 miles of terrible driving. Mid-day might be best, but that's always a gamble.
  • We will be leaving after Thanksgiving from Calgary.I-15 good all the way just time it to avoid Salt Lake city at rush hour. 10 am to 2 pm a good window.20 to 89 to Flagstaff then 17 a good route as TusconJim suggests. If in doubt re towing this ,new to you, 35` unit then I-15 to Las Vegas to 93 to !-10 is an easy, safe route

You may want to wait until the flood water recedes, and the area has a chance to dry out.
(Check the weather reports for Phoenix area)

  • I live in Arizona, and visit my son in Salt Lake city several times a year, including winter. Taking I-15 to Las Vegas and then Highway 93 into Phoenix is the safest way if there is going to be weather. We frequently travel this route in the winter. From about November to April, you have a chance of snow, but the roads are usually plowed and salted very quickly.

If the weather looks nice, a scenic way to go is I-15 to Hwy 20 in Utah. Then take Hwy 89 South through Flagstaff to I-17. Then I-17 to Phoenix. If the weather is nice, this is our preferred route.
