Friction anti sway mount - 4 screws, 6 screws, weld?

Greetings,

I have a draw-tite friction type anti-sway control. Actually I have the control and the 1 1/4" ball on the WD mount. The plate with the ball was left on the previous trailer (sold). Welded from dealer.

I ordered a plate off of Amazon, and it came with only 4 holes and not 6. Square as opposed to rectangle. I mounted it per instructions with the 4 self tapping screws and lock washers.

My trailer is a 19' 2011 Bullet Premiere FBPR. Over the road weight of #5380 weighed at scales, fully loaded. TV is 08 Explorer (max towing capacity #6630) Current tongue wt is #620 (approx 11.5%).

I've seen that several of the sway controls come with 4 hole trailer end ball mounts, and many come with 6 holes. Also, like my last one, it had holes, but the dealer welded it instead. I'm not an engineer (but I play one on the internet). Any thoughts or comments on whether the 4 screws that came with the ball will be sufficient to keep the plate on the trailer? In my mind I picture a lot of back and forth stress on the components of the control working the plate loose over time.

I suppose I could always run 4 beads on the edges of it and be done with it, but I'd rather not if I was sure the plate wouldn't loosen or pull off.

Thoughts, Comments?

Thanks....

  • Mine was bolted on my last trailer for 12 years without a problem or ever coming loose.
  • Use the 4 bolts they will hold until the ball breaks at the weld. Very poor welds on the ball itself. It is a good idea to get a spare.
  • I would use bolts and torque really tight. Only use weld if this does not work. Check it after the first trip and make sure it's still tight. Mine was bolted tight and not welded. No problem for many thousands of miles, but I did check them occasionally just to make sure.
