You are correct but, the road tax was only 3 cents a gallon when i was young and there was considerable less cars and trucks to pay that tax.drsteve wrote:
It's not just EVs, but every vehicle on the road now uses far less fuel than 20 years ago. If we want the roads repaired, we have to pay for it.
And if you go back another 20 years, we where burning even more gas be mile. And from that time the average person's income has gone down in same dollars.
But about 30 years ago we decided the only people that should need to pay income taxes is the people that work. The states must get money from somewhere.
I still think that we aught to put the interstate system in the DOD. That would give unlimited funds. - RGar974417Explorer

We all know taxes don't go down, they only go up.
Pennsylvania still holds the honor of the highest gas tax, 58 cents.
I believe we will have 'slight' increases in 2020, if not before.
I don't think the gas tax is going up, but we just had another increase in registration and transfer fees. These dam politicians just can't get enough of our money. Plus, hundreds of millions from the gas tax go to fund the state police. That is illegal but nobody does anything about it. - colliehaulerExplorer III

NJ had the lowest gas prices in the North-East, people from PA, NJ, DE
used to cross the border to fill up their tanks. Great, more tax
revenue for NJ.
So what did our illustrious leaders do? they raised the gas tax by
23c.
So people from PA, NJ, DE stopped filling their tanks in NJ. Result? Tax revenues are down. No sh*t.
I'm not an economist but I could have figured that out.
So what do we do ? we elect a governor who promises to raise taxes.
Are we stupid or what?
Oh and that 23c tax increase was supposed to be temporary and offset
by a reduction in sales tax. So what do you think happened to the
sales tax?
Are we stupid or what?
Fits, you’re absolutely right! Except, when they implemented the higher gas tax, they added a provision to have a minimum amount brought in by the tax. If the tax didn’t bring in the minimum, it gets raised. So, as we chase away the fuel purchasers from surrounding states the tax goes higher to make up for the loss.
Then we elect the moron who promised to raise taxes!
Folks this is NOTHING new. WE live first and foremost in a Capitalist Country. Right?
It's Basic Economics (all these nice talking points we're making here are.....Nice, but moot.): When Demand goes up, So does the Price. period. Basta. It's always been that way. Basic supply and demand. It's not gonna change. - ChainwrightExplorer

So what does that tell you? We keep saying Europe bad this and Europe bad that. So Again, What does what's happening here tell you? Maybe it's time to RE-Focus or Re set it. - wiskeyVIExplorerIn certain cities of Illinois there's an added gas tax on top of it.

When you account for the whole story - its only 263 gallons. You didn't allow for the $148 fee gas vehicles pay per year over and above the gas tax. You're still getting a bargain in my book. Your paying $248 in tax a year. The average motorist is probably paying about $400.
illinois is also taxing EV owners $248 p/y per vehicle. at the new gas tax rate of $.38 p/g. that's the equivalent of ~652 gallons of gas per year.
I sit corrected. my gasser plates are going to $148 each this year and my MH is going to run ~$200. the EVs are going to $248 or roughly 263-gallons of gas.
in calendar 2018 I burned a combined total (two vehicles used exclusively in Illinois) of 112.5-gallons for an additional $22 in road tax. and my county levies an additional $0.04 p/g or an additional $4.50. including my plates that came to $245 in 2018. assuming roughly the same amount of gas burned I anticipate an increase of 40% to $346. and that's just for those two vehicles. and
our third vehicle is our toad and of course we pay a varied amount of gas tax in different states. in 2018 I burned 404-gallons in that vehicle and whopping 1152-gallons in the MH. no idea at all what our average state gas tax is for those vehicles.
not really complaining about the tax per se...it's my choice to burn gas. my complaint is centered on the corruption, deception and lies told by our ethically challenged governor and the legislature about how this revenue will be spent.
I had a whole 'nuther paragraph, a rant if you will, about Illinois, our gov and the legislature but I deleted it to avoid that tricky left turn into politics. happy to share my thoughts via private message should anyone give a hoot. :)
