GEO Tracker on dolly

For what it's worth, my 97 Sidekick Sport manual says t-case in neutral, trans in park with manual hubs. I have manual hubs/automatic trans and have flat towed it a couple thousand miles that way with zero issues. I don't know why you would have to dolly it, especially being a 5-spd. Unless of course you don't want to buy a tow bar for flat towing.

Yes, that is correct per my '02 manual and by memory on my '95.
'02 manual agrees with tying steering wheel straight.

Thanks for all the replies. I did some more checking today and it is a 95 4X4 Geo with a 5 speed. From what I've read on line, since I have no manual, my plan is to back it on the dolly. Put the transfer case in neutral. 5 speed in second. Have the front hubs set in free. Have the key in the acc position. Tie the steering wheel straight. Does this sound right?

I don't know of any 4X4 or AWD vehicle that can be towed with the front wheels on a dolly, unless the rear drive shaft is disconnected or removed.
There may be some, I don't know. I have never heard of one.
I recommend following the manufacturer's instructions.

Seems too complex to tow it on a dolly, why not tow it 4 down? Much simpler.....

The year is important! Many years can be towed 4 down so putting the front wheels on a dolly wouldn't be an issue. If you have automatic hubs I would use the dolly because although it's possible, disconnecting them can be problematic.
On my 1991 (4 down towing), the front hubs would be unlocked, the ignition key turned to "off" but not removed (this would leave the steering wheel free to turn on mine), the automatic transmission put in "park" and the transfer case put in "neutral". Every 200 miles or less I would start the engine, put the transmission in drive and let it idle for at least 1 minute (this was to lube the transfer case). This is all per the manufacturer's instructions. I towed the car 1000's of miles this way.

They are right: unless you have unlocked the locking hubs on the down wheels, you can't tow a 4x4 on a dolly. @liveneasy is lucky the differential heated up and blew its oil, but didn't catch fire. There's nothing more thrilling than standing alongside the road watching the flaming differential with fire licking at the back side of the gas tank. Been there, saw that.

I have two trackers. A '95 Geo, manual trans 4x4 and a '03 Chevy, manual trans 4x4. I towed the '95 Geo on a dolly twice. It was a major pain. I first tried towing in neutral, with the transfer case also in neutral and the rear wheels on the ground. After a 200 mile trip there was oil all over the dolly. It came from the transfer case. After refilling and checking with a local mechanic I was told the tracker needed to be towed with the rear wheels on the dolly, transmission and transfer case in neutral, key in acc position and the steering wheel roped down. I tried that method for about 200 miles before giving up... I just couldn't get the front wheels locked down well enough to eliminate the vibration I felt, which I believe was from the front wheels.

I picked up a used tow bar from a local dealer and ordered a tow bracket online, received it in three days. Spent an afternoon installing the front bracket and haven't been happier. I sold the tow dolly for more then I paid for the tow bar and bracket.

If your going to keep the tracker as a toad, do yourself a favor and convert to 4 down towing.
