Anyone else have trouble with worn out or weak, (what do you call those things anyway) gizmos that hold the hatchback of cars open and some of the outside cargo doors open on an RV? I got tired of the door hitting me in the head when I was getting out the electric cord or the holding tank drain hose and came up with an idea to hold them without looking for and buying new ones. I cut a few pieces of 1/2 inch plastic PVC water pipe (very cheap at the hardware store) to the right length and then made a little less than a 1/4 inch slot down one side with my table saw so that I can slip it on. Now when I raise the door, my invention falls into place and holds it up. And when I want to close it, I just slide the "pipe" over the worn out cylinder and shut the door.
This is such a great idea! Less than 10 minutes after I told DH this tip I could hear his saw outside. All of our cargo doors have these now, even the doors that aren't broken yet. And they work great. Our PVC must be smaller or our gizmos are bigger than cakepa's because the pvc won't fit over the big part without forcing it, and the rod part is on the top. But we just lay the new gadget in the front of the bin so that's the first thing we grab after we open the door.
