I guess the, why I use either homemade fire starters or commercial wax fire starters cut up in chunks instead of paper is I can store enough fire starters for a weeks worth of campfires in a 2 lb coffee can. In our small slide in camper we don't carry a stack of newspapers to start fires. Also we store the fire starters in the wheel wheel of the truck where papers would get damp if not sealed in plastic. Even at home with our wood stove I find building a fire with a small 1"X1"X2" piece of wax log and no real kindling, is a lot faster then messing with paper and kindling.
I only made this last batch of fire starters because I had a bunch of wax left over from an experiment, I was doing to make fire blocks for my Fire Cap.
This link tells about my experiment in making fire blocks. Ended up being cheaper and easier to use wax logs cut into chunks or wood scarps.
