I did two things with our clothes rods. First I put a piece of electrical thin-wall pipe inside each one to beef them up so they wouldn't sag with the weight of the clothes (mine in particular).
Secondly we got a bungee about 5' long and put one hook on my DWs side then just stretched it over to the end of clothes on my side. Works great just unhook when you stop and life is good.
