Hitch/WD/Sway Decision...Inputs Please

Hi Team,

I tow a 37 foot Toy hauler TT
1) About 12.5K Trailer weight (all loaded up)
2) TW runs 1500 to 1700 Pounds

Tow Vehicle
1) Ford F250 Diesel, CC, Bilstein shocks, helwig sway bar, and air bags on rear.
2) 2400 Pound Cargo Capacity.
3) Typically do not haul anything in truck except wife and I. tools and such are in the Tow Hauler.

Had towed for a while with a Hensley. But have gotten tired of always trying to keep TW under 1400 pounds (highest rating for a hensley/propride. So I am switching to an new setup that will Handle more TW. Aside from handling more TW, I want to chose components that will (as much as possible) help smooth out the ride in the TV.

So Here it is:
1) Curt 2.5 Inch on the TV. 2500 Pound TW, 20,000 Trailer Weight Capacity

2) Gen-Y Torsion Shank. See discussion in this thread:
Gen-Y Torsion Shank

3) Blue Ox Sway Pro with 2000 bars for WD

4) Installing Tuson Trailer Stability control and Sway control. Links to info:

I invite your comments and inputs. Thanks for your time and thoughts.
  • Yes it is too bad the ABS/Disk brakes do not have the tuson sway control as an option.

How I ended up with the Tuson Sway control is I was looking for the best ride improvement I could get. Read lots of threads on how the Blue Ox Sway Pro improved the ride in the TV. However, with our large trailer (12 feet high and 37 feet long), I was not convinced the sway control of the sway pro was up to the task. Adding the Tuson gives me the confidence to use the smoother riding sway pro vice the Reese Dual Cam. Had I not installed the Tuson, I would have gone with the reese dual cam for its superior sway control.

As the sway pro comes with a shank included, I hope to get an opportunity to compare the Gen-Y shank to the blue Ox standard shank. If I do, I will certainly report back.
  • Wow looks like it should be a great setup!

I've thought about adding a Tuscon sway controller, but my trailer is really well behaved, and in my case I think disc brakes are a better upgrade, since the 6k axles under my trailer are only marginal when I'm fully loaded up. Fully loaded emergency braking at highway speeds puts the van into full ABS even on dry pavement. I'm definitely going with them since they have an ABS option for the hydraulic actuator.

I'd really be interested if you could do a back-to-back comparison with and without the GEN-Y shank:)
