Homeless - safe to store propane/gas in car while sleeping?

When Angela and I used to car camp in the old Grand Cherokee we would chain the little 5 pound tank to one of the wheels at night or to a local picnic table. I second the regional small town parks. Very cheap, usually basic but good facilities, showers etc. car camping is reasonably common around here, specially if its raining.
