How Much Calgon ?

We have a 45 gallon black tank. How much Calgon (Water Softner) do you use in yours to keep things running well?
  • It's my understanding that the Calgon will coat the inside of the tank making it slippery which in turns helps to keep solids and tp sticking to it. Old wives tale? Haven't the slightest. idea.'

  • I do not use Calgon, just add a squirt of Ivory and 1/3 tank of water on the trip home. Has worked for me for years.

When we winterize I do a high water pressure tank rinse with water down the toilet tube and into the tank with a wand. Have you seen some of what sticks to the side of the toilet down tube? ;D

Calgon just makes the soap, soapier. Lets it hold particles in suspension better, like soft water does. It helps the soap clean but does not clean itself, it prevents hard water deposits through chemical action on the magnesium and calcium found in hard water.

Unless you are constantly filling your tanks with hard water you do not need Calgon.
  • Wow, never even heard of this and we haven't put anything in our tank since we started in the late 90's and current MH we've had 15+ years, and never had a problem with black and/or grey tanks and gauges all have worked fine. All we've done is when thoroughly black rinsing, when closed valves, added about 1/10th tank of fresh water, and off we go. We always flush with plenty of water for the most part unless long term boon docking somewhere, and then we will always top up the black and grey tanks before dumping with fresh water about a half/one hours drive before we dump typically to slosh around.

Now I'm wondering if we should have been putting this Calgon thing in the tanks all along???? What is the premise to do this if you don't mind me asking?
  • I think most will have their own formula...here is mine.

I have a 50 gal black and 65 gal gray. With each when I get ready to travel, i will dump both, rinse the black and then put about 5 gallons of clean water into each tank. I will then put one cup of liquid laundry detergent (I use Oxy-Clean) and one capful of liquid Calgon into each tank.

Arriving at destination, I will drain both tanks and again put about 5 gallons of clean water back into them. While at destination, we will use both tanks normally and trump if necessary. When we get ready to travel to next destination, I will repeat the process.

  • I pour 2 cups of calgon & a cup of liquid soap into a gallon jug, then fill with water. Then pour about 1/4 to 1/3 of the gallon solution into the commode to flush into the 30 gallon black tank, use tank til 2/3 or more full, dump and start over again. I also pour some into the grey tank after about every 3rd dump.
  • In our fifth wheel, we used 4 capfuls of liquid calgon to a one third to half full tank, drove, then dumped when it burped, after we landed. That was in a 55 gallon black tank.

I dont think you can use too much. If you use powder, mix it in a bucket with warm water and a scoop of powder he laundry soap. I added about a third cup of liquid bleach or orange spic and span too.

  • I mix Calgon, cheap liquid detergent 50-50 shape well, then put in 1 cap full,no problems and the gauges all work just fine,36 gallon tank.
