How did you determine the polarity, did you confirm it with a volt meter? When I replaced my trailer tail light license plate holder fixture, there was an always on positive (black wire) and two switched grounds (different colors,) one for running, one for stop.

In RV land, for whatever reason, black is almost always positive.
