Insurance Question

I have a boat insured with state farm. I asked my agent that since it was originally insured for $22,000 10 years ago if I could just lower the coverage to a closer number to fact. he said that if it was totaled I would get the 22,000$. I asked if I could up the coverage to $50,000 and he said no. :)
