I soaked the jeans in water with about a cup of baking soda, for 2 hours. It got rid of almost all the smell. They are wearable now.

Be careful using odoban that stuff has a very strong odor that does not always come out of the clothes. Those with any type of allergies will have problems with it, unless they have come up with a new formula.

Vinegar can be used to soften clothes. I tried it because I like to line dry my towels and they were very rough. The vinegar does keep them soft. Only thing is I used too much and all my clothes smelled like vinegar. Had to wash them twice to get out the vinegar smell.

Distilled (white) vinegar.

I have good luck removing odors from old clothing and sheets using vinegar. You can also spot treat by soaking in vinegar and tossing baking soda over problem areas. Works really well on pillow cases that have stained from body oils.

I've had a problem with jeans occasionally, too. It seemed to be from their dye.
Anyway, when my kids were on swim team, I would treat the occaisional forgotten, damp, stinky towel by adding two tablespoons of plain washing ammonia to its laundry load. Stink gone!

I use a full cup or two of white vinegar with my detergent on a hot wash cycle to remove odors. It even worked on an old quilt I bought at a yard sale for cheap because it smelled moldy.

I already tried 20 mule team borax. I'll try the baking soda, I have some here. I can't get the odoban until tomorrow. Thanks to all.

Baking Soda is a good general purpose deodorant, Add like 1/4 to one cup to the wash.
