Low overhead

Well in three rvs I've never been caught behind a low bridge. Few weeks ago I missed sign for low bridge , drove 10 miles, stopped and turned around , and found another way. No damage and only my ego was bruised. I also realized I had no idea what my height was (but I knew it wasn't fitting under that bridge).

Anyone have suggestions on avoiding low bridges? Can gps be set to avoid routes?

Get a copy of Rand McNally's "Motor Carriers Atlas". This will give you low clearances, authorized routes and restricted routes. IMO nothing beats stubby pencil, electronics/GPS units can burp, etc and not route you away from low clearances.

Lol when I grabbed my phone to take a detour and it didn't work I was so mad. Then I realized it's my fault to trust a phone.

  • We use our good Sam GPS 7730 which lets you add the height, weight and propane tanks.
Once you have the height in it will take you around any low bridges.

I just use iPhone now but I'm buying a gps. Lol on top of everything else I didn't have service so I couldn't quickly find a way around.

  • Pay attention to the signage on roadside :B

We used secondary/back roads during our 7 yrs FT travel.

Missed one sign due to trees/bushes over grown but it was obvious that the bridge was very low.
Like you we just turned around

One other overpass snuck up on us due to road going over the overpass then making a turn and merging with road going under overpass.
Back up or go under :S
10 vehicles backup behind us.....one guy yelled "you'll make it. They cut the road surface down and never changed sign"
We crept under at idle.....just cleared.

GPS made too many errors to be reliable enough for back road travels. 'Miss Garmin' got muffled and out in a bag
