Manufacturer Repairs

Is it normal to have to take your camper to the manufacturer for repairs? I have a small toy hauler and the rear ramp was starting to come apart. I took it to the dealer for repairs and I ended up spending a day and a half and two tanks of gas to take it to the manufacturer and drop it off. I'll do the same thing when they're done. Its under warranty and I'm happy they are taking care up it, it just seems like I am investing a lot to get the warranty work done. Should I ask for some kind of compensation for this, or is this just how the RV industry works? I'm not mad or complaining, just curious.
  • Thanks for the info. The goal is to get the camper fixed, and your right, i might be pleasantry surprised when i pick it up. They seemed like pretty friendly folks when i dropped it off.
  • When my crappy Starcraft went back to the factory twice they came and got it. Since I was only a couple hours away I choose to go the the factory and inspect the TT when they were done and brought it home.
  • Winnie did not compensate me for my expenses of getting my rig to the factory for repair but they sure went above and beyond taking care things I did complain about and many I did not complain about
  • Our went back and they sent a transport truck to our house to pick it up. And returned it the same way.
  • On a previous trailer we had, it needed to go back to the factory for a repair (warranty). The dealer transported it to and from.

It isn't unusual, sometimes a PROPER repair can only be done at the manufacturers facility or the selling dealer does not have proper training to handle the repair or cost of shipping a large part may be prohibitively expensive.

I have read more than one post over the years where someones trailer had to be hauled back to the manufacturer to have an entire wall or roof replaced.. Those kind of repairs would be difficult for a local small dealer shop to do..

As for "compensation" goes, I would ask or inquire politely to the manufacturer reps to see if they will "comp" you for your cost of fuel and time spent hauling there and back.. You might get lucky and they reimburse you for those expenses!
