To the OP, I agree this day is much more important than merely cookouts and shopping, but other parts of your post puzzle me. At any rate, I thank you, sir, for your service to our great country and will also take the time to honor those who have served and sacrificed.

Not everyone qualifies to serve. I have a niece who was so looking forward to serving in the Navy but sadly they discovered a medical condition which will prohibit her from serving. She was devastated since she devoted all the time she could to ROTC in high school and planned a career. Now she's trying to get her life back together and has had to rethink everything. Not all the 97% are worthless goof offs.

Only 10% or less ever stepped up to serve. Although I never had to leave our shores I am proud to have served my country in what ever capacity they deemed necessary.

I think that many folks forget that the reason we have Memorial Day is to remember those who died in service to our country.

The day is not to say "thanks for your service" to all who have served.
For those of us who are still enjoying this life,this day is not for us.

I have served, and in combat, maybe even with your little brother or some of those others you mention from the 60’s… but I refuse to believe majority would have you eternal and overwhelming revulsion towards those you served…

By all means enjoy the holiday and yes please take the time remember the true reason and meaning of the day…

I do agree that many more could have served in many other unselfish ways and haven’t. But I pray for them just the same…

That same 97% paid your salary, benefits, retirement, training, weapons, ect. Without the 97% there would be no military or a need for one.

I too am proud to have served in the military.(20 years active USAF,after 2 years USNR). In no way do I "detain" any disdain for any of those who did not spend time in harms way.Nor can I believe that the attitude of a few is the attitude of the majority of those that are presently serving in the military,or those that have served in the past.
As posted by others,there are many ways to serve our country.
I agree partially with the OP. Let's not forget that this day is much more than a day off the job. Take at least a little time to reflect on the real meaning and purpose behind Memorial Day

Most times, us that are military, forget to pick the fights that you can win. These post from non military are fights that cannot be won. Unless you spent your time in the military, and in harms way, you cannot understand the disdain that military folks detain.

Suffice it to say that all who served deserve a heart felt thank you from one who has been there.

Kind of know what you might be saying Mr. Moore.
We have a neighbor across the road that provides everything for 2 sons.
One @ 26 is finally starting to function normally as a working stiff.
The other low level 28 year old is still on his ass playing video games getting fatter.

These 2 "cling-ons" have never been induced to do anything.
Mom and Dad are now stuck with these two social retards.

Glad I had the chance to serve.
Learned a lot after pulling my head out.

No, not everyone has served in the military. Not everyone qualifies. My son tried to follow in my footsteps and was disquaified because of his vision. His disappointment broke my heart. Served 1969 to 1999.
