In California, if a death occurs in a home within the past 3 years, it must be disclosed to any buyers of that home. Does that same law apply to RV's?

PS, I have never bought a house in CA, but in my home state/s I have mostly lived in old houses. I assume lots of people have died in them over the years.

California has a lot of strange laws. So do other states.There was a time when almost everybody died at home. This was before emergency rooms, and before auto accidents becoming the number one cause of unexpected deaths in the U.S. (vehicle safety improvements have since passed that honor in this country back to influenza).As Jeff says, it's a car. Different rules. In the U.K., any motor vehicle in (or on) which a person has died gets a special tag which prevents it being sold to be used again on the road. I wonder how many states have a law like that. When my dad was doing damage appraisal on automobiles, his company had special rules for handling those involving deaths in the collision or incident. Various state laws had different effects on the salvage value of the remaining hulk, e.g. if no parts can be resold, salvage value was zero, as in the U.K.I has been four years since my wife died in my arms in the family room of the home where I still live, and this is not something I intend to discuss with prospective buyers.

A house on our street is a very nice one - in excellent condition. The owner, A Pearl Harbor vet, died peacefully at home in his 90's. His partner stayed on by herself, but eventually couldn't manage and went into care.

The house sold very quickly, but was back on the market a few days later and was bought by an out-of-town buyer who hadn't jumped in quickly enough when it was first advertised.

When I talked to her as I was passing with our dogs, she said the original buyer was Islamic and bailed out of the deal when he found someone had died there. He claimed that it's against their religious beliefs to purchase a house where a death has occurred on the premises.

You only have to disclose a death in an RV if the front end is really crumpled up, there is a big black stain and spatter and attracts a lot of flies, and there are a few blue gloves and some stained gauses, aotherwise no.

Love this discussion. My mom died in our house of old age natural causes. Her bed was in our living room where our couch is. I still don't like to sit in that spot. But that Is just me, she just passed away less than a year ago.

here we have questions about flooding, and sinkholes. and several similar things but as I helped mom fill out her disclosure on her house about a month, it didn't ask about deaths.

How could you possibly know if there are buried pipes that have been in the ground well over 75 years? If you've been in California for awhile, there have been several leaks and explosions in and around Long Beach from lines nobody knew were there. same in N.Cal a few years ago and it took out an entire neighborhood. Isn't that what an escrow company is supposed to do?

Before once again condemning California...

Alaska and South Dakota apparently have a similar law - if someone died by suicide or murder within the past year, it must be disclosed.

Other states have dealt with lawsuits regarding this issue. For some people, they aren't comfortable living in a house where someone died - why not eliminate them from the start and go directly to the people who are OK with it? Why risk having the buyer find out 3 weeks after the sale and sue you over it, when with disclosure they would be out of there?
