Non-Resident RV Registration in New Mexico

Not an rv but my boat and its trailer are registered in Az as a non resident. Renewal comes to my home address.

The State of Maine allows nonresidents to register travel trailers. There is a 5% sales tax.

I live in NM and never knew this. It is correct the sales tax on any vehicle is 3%. Registration renewal costs are a little out of date. My coach renewal is about $120 a year. Not sure of the exact amount as I renew for two years at a time and it seems to go up every time I renew. Guess Id check the state I live in to see if they agree, NM also has a rule that you must get a drivers license within 30 days of moving here. If you go over 30 days they add $75 to you bill. I cant imagine other states allowing folks to drive and register in a state other thsn the one they live in. After 20 plus years in the military I know there were exception for active duty folks, but everyone else had to have current residentency drivers license and registration in states where I lived.

When I was stationed in CA (I was active duty and a NM resident) CA apparently would pay a bounty to anyone who reported a vehicle with out of state plates that had been in state for over 30 days. It was enough money that I was reported twice by my law abiding "neighbors".

I would provide my military ID and copy of registration in NM and all was forgiven. Active duty military are, or were then, exempt from vehicle registration requirements in the state they are stationed in.

I seem to remember a discussion about this and California. If you buy out of state you need to keep the rig out of state for some period of time (1 year I think) or else pay sales tax. Maybe one of the CA lawyer types (Lwiddis) can verify.

Here in Taxachusetts they have it figured out. If you want to register your vehicle here, you pay sales tax regardless of where you bought it. If you already paid sales tax somewhere else, you pay the difference between what you paid and what the Mass tax would be.

Lest you think you'll just leave it registered at a friend's address in New Hampshire (a NO sales tax state right next door), the Dept of Revenue has roaming snitches driving around looking for out of state registered vehicles (and boats) that have been parked or docked in state for more than a few weeks.

You can purchase a vehicle in any state and not pay tax. If you are not a resident you purchase a temporary or drive away tag for a small fee that is good for 30 days. You then have to register your vehicle in your home state and pay the appropriate sales tax to your home state, not the state where purchased. The only time the dealer will collect the tax from you is if the state you live in and the state you purchase from are reciprocal states. The tax is then sent to your home state along with paperwork to register your vehicle. Reciprocal states are usually adjoining states.

Montana doesn’t charge sales tax with a faux LLC, which they are cracking down on, and have been for many years.

You have to take delivery in NM, which means paying a delivery Company to drive your “ new rig “ to the State line.
