Normal Round Bar WD hitch wear?

I have owned a few Trunnion style WD hitches over the years...with Awesome PUP I went with a round bar style Pro Series with 550 lb bars. This hitch rides incredibly well.

But...I noticed some wear on the bars where the bottom of the WD hitch head sockets touch the WD bars...leaving a mark on the bars...

I think it's normal...as it has pretty much only impacted the paint.

Just wanted to double check...is this normal wear on round bar style WD bars? And yes...I grease the hitch...

Thanks!

  • Thanks for the reply Barney,

I'll make sure that the hitch gets grease in these two points. I'm glad that the wear is in the expected spots.

I'll probably mark one of the bars to make sure they are used on the same side. I would like for any wearing to be done consistently with the same socket and same bar.

    Thanks!

  • You should put a dab of grease on that area and also on the opposite side at the top of the bar. Those are the two normal wear areas on the round bar hitch. What you have is not unusual. Just keep those parts greased and both the bars and hitch head should last for many years.

Without the use of grease on those areas, the bar will eventually wear into an oval shape and so will the bottom of the hitch head.

  • This hitch has less than 100 miles on it now.

I use my grease gun on the zerks... I really think it's just the break in period...I'll try to add a better picture. The grease works it way down the bars when i insert them

I have experienced a hitch head failure before and it's not something I want to experience again so that's probably why I am watching this like a hawk.

    Thanks!

  • How many miles? We had about 50,000 or 60.000 miles on a set that were worn more then that but I never greased them. When I went from 800 to 1000 lb bars because of a heavier TT I noticed the head was worn also.
  • Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks OK. are using any type of lube?
