Parking regs in California

If you live in the 91722-91723-91724 area codes in California, beware that the city fathers are at it again. They are having a hearing on May 6th on parking regulation for your RV. "No parking in front of a structure and the curb on your lot".
For more information call Rich @ 626-332-2092 This notice is on the Good Sam web site, but this is the just of it.

I live in southern Orange County CA. The economy has recovered locally. Hyundai and Kia have recently invested in US headquarters in Fountain Valley and Irvine. Mazda headquarters is in Irvine. Ford and Chrysler have satellite campuses. Toyota is maintaining their Newport Beach design center (Calty).

We do have issues. Drought is major issue right now. Economy has not recovered equally well in all locations. Some cities have old infrastructure which needs upgrading. Air pollution has been greatly improved due to regulation, and will continue to improve.

As far as I can tell population has not decreased significantly.

Regulation is a direct consequence of population density. Population density has its benefits and curses. It probably is best that most of the population is densely packed in places like CA. and not spread out equally over the entire USA. It allows a more libertarian vibe in places like Montana and Wyoming. Wide open spaces and minimal intrusion.

California has been a fantastic home for me.

Many people use the city streets as their own personal parking lot and I am glad when the local officials enforce the ordinances. Unfortunate that some people are so lacking in consideration that the ordinances are needed in the first place.

Anyone who thinks this applies only to California is extremely uninformed and naive. Time maybe to get out more.

I for one hate living in California and having the ocean with free beaches 10 minutes from my house. It is awful. Even worse with the weather being bright and sunny and 71 degrees. Not sure I can survive this much longer.

I apologize if I stepped on someone's toes. But this does not give you the right to come back at me the way you did.
I posted to bring this situation to light as I did on other forums I belong to, thats of concern to our freedoms.(forgot California does not have freedoms) Your right, area should have been ZIP, But the best of it is IT got your attention, thanks for that. As in my area (surrounding locations) and yours, alot of people are not informed as to the happenings of the governments new proposed regulation and how it effects us all.
(Enjoy your Smog and dry rain free weather you forgot to list that to.)

And so your response to a perceived slight is to bash California. As I said in my first post I live here and can find plenty of reason to bash the state just as I can find reason to bash any other state. None of them are perfect. I can also find plenty to like about California and any other state.

I appreciate your intent however your original post was way too vague to actually respond to. It would have been helpful to be able to see what the actual proposed regulation is. The actual wording or a link to find it would help. I went to the Good Sam website and did not see any reference at all. I have done an internet search and was unable to find anything. Without that information we don't know if the actual proposal is fair or not. I stand by my statement in my first post "Instead of ranting about it we should be discussing a solution that is fair and just for everyone".

Now contrary to what you evidently believe we do have freedom in California, the same as anywhere in the United States. Freedom is a difficult thing to balance though. Some people seem to think that it means that they can do whatever they want even if it infringes on someone else's freedom. Fortunately that is not how our country works. Or at least not how it was designed to work.

And yes we have smog. That is why we also have some of the strictest regulations to combat it. Don't get me wrong I think a lot of our regulations are very misguided however I also understand that in every case be it smog or parking the regulations have been enacted because there is a problem. Like most places we in California have not always done the best at balancing our regulations to solve these problems, but you can't fault us for trying.

And yes Gonzo42 the population has declined but is that really a bad thing? For years we have complained about how overpopulated it was becoming and now we want to complain about a decline? While this has been happening we have also seen our economy improve. We now have a balanced budget for the first time in 10 years. Yes some companies have left. While regulations and taxation certainly contribute to some of these decisions they are not always the only or even the biggest reason. Those areas that think that all they have to do is deregulate things to boost their economy well only time will tell. Eventually we will see what problems they face. Who knows they could end up with exploding fertilizer plants, oil spills, and contaminated rivers. Unfortunately when they do they will be crying and asking for the rest of us to help clean up the mess. We will, however it is my opinion that before doing so we should require those states to enact regulations to prevent and clean up these problems in the future.

Coleman you are wrong about Toyota moving to TX. You and others might think that but Toyota says it has nothing to do with CA regulations. The are moving to consolidate closer to their manufacturing plants which are mainly in the South.

And exactly how many campgrounds are in these zip codes versus how many residents with streets? I don't think the grand "campground owners rule the world" conspiracy is very valid here.

Similar laws here in Ohio in certain communities, and probably all around the USA. Locally, the village of Whitehouse has a zoning regulation that requires RV's to be parked on the side or rear of lots and on a permanent hard pad (concrete, blacktop, etc). Suits me fine, especially since I'm not in the village limits.

If you want to talk about silly California laws, check out the one from last week that will require all men's restrooms to have a baby-changing station. Really? A state needs to regulate that?

Those of you unfamiliar with metropolitan and suburban areas in California may not realize most residential lots are fairly small and it's almost impossible to store or park an RV behind the house where it can't be seen from the street.

Having said that, I fully realize most non-RVers see RVs as giant eyesores and I agree with them. As an RV owner, I would not want to live next door to someone that stores an RV in front of the house or in the street. I commend the municipalities that require RVs to be stored on the side or rear of the house.

We're in Upland as mentioned and I don't mind the regulations at all. All one needs to do is take a stroll through San Bernardino to the east and see the junk yards in the front and rear of homes. Junk cars, old washing machines, etc. No thanks. Upland has a median home price of around $600,000 with lots of homes over a million dollars. They want to keep it that way.

I don't blame them, if I were Toyota I would do the same thing.
You guys obviously didn't listen to the back story about why they made the decision to move. Got nothing to do with parking anyway.

I don't think you read how "just me" titled his post. Most would think from the title that it covered all of CA. And what's the purpose of ragging about things like Toyota moving out of state? Five of the first ten posts have nothing to do with RVing.

I for one thought that the Mod settled this California Bashing thing months ago because it serves no good purpose. Maybe he'll step up again.

I'm a native Californian and also an Army brat. I was raised here, all over the country, and not in this country. I find plenty wrong with this state. I have lived in or near the L.A. County since '64. I also accept any and all constructive criticisms. I will not be parochial or defensive. Observe that the population of CA has actually decreased for the first time in history. People and companies are fleeing the state, even counting those immigrating in. I believe I know why, but draw your own conclusions.

Kudos to Redsky and Shakyjay, I am a second generation and my wife is a first generation Californian. We live in the N/E corner of LA and these folks that bash us from a distance should read their own laws. Some are really restrictive.

To begin with parking regulations other than Interstate and State Highways are controlled by local governments so this is not "California" that is doing this. Such parking regulations are not that unusual in cities throughout the US. There are numerous reasons that communities have to resort to them. Some of these areas have narrow streets with limited parking and a large RV can be an obstruction. I have seen some places where trailers, fifth wheels, motorhomes, and boats stay parked on the street in the same spot for weeks and months at a time. In these cases they can be hazardous and in most cities it would be illegal. Much of California unlike many other states has fairly moderate weather. As such we attract quite a few people who have no where to live other than a car or RV (that is if they are lucky). A growing problem in some communities are these RV's being parked and camped in and not always just overnight. I also understand that regulations to address the issues can and sometimes do become a little too heavy handed. Instead of ranting about it we should be discussing a solution that is fair and just for everyone.

As far as bashing California goes, there is plenty wrong here. Of course there is plenty wrong anywhere you go. I just don't understand why all these people that hate this place so much keep coming here.
