Pennsylvania Non-Commercial Class A License Questions

In the future I've been thinking about moving up to another 5th wheel and 350 or most likely a 450 Dually. I will be in the combined weight rating of 28,000 lbs which per Pa law states I must have my Non-commercial Class A License as stated:

CLASS A (minimum age 18): Required to operate any combination of vehicles with a gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, where the vehicle(s) being towed is/are in excess of 10,000 pounds. Example: Recreational Vehicle, when the towing vehicle is rated at 11,000 pounds and the vehicle towed is rated at 15,500 pounds (total combination weight of 26,500 pounds).

Who here in Pa has gone through getting this license and what all is involved? Looks like it is $5 for the permit and then you take the hand on practical/road test requiring someone with the same license or higher to be accompanying you at test time. I don't have the new truck and trailer yet just thinking about the future and not sure how I could go about getting it before I have the truck/trailer combo. Any insight from anyone that has gone through this would be appreciated.
