Pros and cons of purchasing out of state

We are looking at purchasing a Jayco TT out of state. We live in TN and are finding better deals in OH and IL. Are there any reasons we shouldn't do this? What are your experiences with purchasing out of state? Also, if we do this, should we have that dealer install the sway hitch or have it done somewhere at home before we,leave? Thank you.

Since you are considering Jayco and buying out of state, check out RV Direct. They seem to typically have the best prices in the country on Jayco.

We checked them out today and they do not offer the 27RLS. They are now offering a 28RLS. They've changed the floor plan and took away a lot of storage in the bathroom. It's a horrible floorplan, IMO anyway. I was so excited to try and get a trailer there. ๐Ÿ˜•

I bought from Holman Motors in Batavia, Ohio.

They also got me financing that beat out the cheapest rate I had already lined up.

Only those states you mention have an RVDirect location. You can pick up at their location, or you can pay for them to deliver to you. However, some manufacturers (like Jayco) require the customer to pick up in person, so it would not be available to be delivered to you.

Thank you everyone for the responses!

First, to the people that mentioned RVDirect...We'd never heard of them, so thank you! We are not able to locate on in Virginia, though. Seems they are in FL, NY and Iowa, I think. Is the one in Virginia called something else?

GoPackGo, what is the name of the volume dealer you mentioned in Ohio?

Thank you again everyone!

I don't understand why any dealer wouldn't want warranty work regardless of where the unit was purchased. They get paid the same for the warranty work whether they sold it or not. :?

That was my experience. Had zero issues getting warranty work at four different dealers. Glad to do the work.

I traveled to a volume dealer just outside Cincinnati, Ohio from Florida to buy my new fiver because I saved a ton of money. No problems getting it registered and licensed in Florida or with the amount of taxes that I paid.

I started fulltimimg 6 months later so I knew I would not have a 'home' dealer. The dealerships that did warranty work seemed glad to get the work. And my fiver builder (Heartland) will also authorize warranty work to be done by an independent contractor too.

I would do the same thing over again, even if I was not going to fulltime.

The Lemon Law in Washington State only applies to purchases made in Washington State. I have bought two vehicles from Dave Smith in Idaho. We paid for the local taxes in Washington State, no Idaho taxes.

We did buy a Jeep Cherokee locally in Washington State. It was later returned as a Lemon. Thankfully we did not buy it from Idaho. Otherwise I would still be making payments on a non driveable vehicle. The Washington State Lemon Law does apply to parts of an RV. Every State has different laws.

We live in NC, and bought our TT in SC. NEVER again. Had to jump thru too many hoops to get a tag. Too many to mention here. Not the fault of the dealer, but just the way it is between SC, and NC. Really liked our dealer. (Bob Ledford's RV Adventure) but if I ever buy again, It will be in NC.
We could NOT simply transfer the tag as we can in NC. It was really a pain.,

As for warranty work. The RV dealer just down the road sells Forest River, Not APEX though. He told me any thing we need, just drop by. Terrill Camping Center.
BTW. As y'all know, they all have the same stuff in them.

We live in NC. Bought our last two in Va.. But that's because the prices at RV Outlet are the best around for toy haulers.

The only cons are returning for service. Dealers around here have no interest in doing warranty work for a camper bought somewhere else. If they do take it in, they'll get to it when they can.

RV Outlet is 97 miles from our house. We've driven up there 14 times for browsing, purchasing, and service work. When we had our Cyclone, it was terrible. The service work involved big issues so we had to leave it and then go get it when it was ready. But our Work & Play has needed service work three times and each time, the dealership knew we were coming, they jumped right on it when we got there, and we were headed back home within an hour or two.

In 2007 we drove 500 miles one way to purchase a new TT. No issues in the four years we had it. Warranty work can be done by any competent RV service center/dealer.

Be very careful about sales tax if you have it in your state. Depending on the circumstances you may have to pay twice.

Are you sure?

I'm pretty sure that all the states have laws and forms to ensure you don't get hit twice.

Yes, I'm sure because I just went through this with a new car that I bought out of Ca. The car was not double taxed (it is exempt) but If I had bought a trailer, HD truck (or any truck that can haul more than 1500#), boat or several other items, I would have had to pay tax twice.
This is for Wa. state and I suspect other states have similarly complicated rules.
