Question about golf cart charger.

We have an older EZGO (1987) golf cart, and of course, the charger that came with it.

My question is: If I leave the charger connected to the golf cart, without being connected to a 110 VAC, will the charger slowly drain the batteries?

  • My charger would automatically shut off when the batts were fully charged. I never left the charger connected longer than it took to charge.

As with many things "your millage may vary"

A properly designed charger (Key words Properly Designed) will not discharge.

At least one maker of golf cars the charger is a 2 part device, PART of it is "Resident" in the golf car at all times.. This one will not since it is disconnected when it's not plugged in to 120vac.
  • The one campground we went to we always rented a golf cart and the charger was hardwired to the cart. they installed a retractable reel in the back to pull out and plug into the post. never had an issue with discharging. when charging there is a switch that closes to charge the battery, when off this switch opens. so it will not discharge!
  • We leave our EZ Go connected sometimes, just unplug it and it has never drained the batteries.
  • No. If your charger is working properly it will not drain the pack if plugged into you cart if charger is not plugged into shore power. My question is why not leave it plugged in? The charger will automatically turn off when the pack is charged.
