Recall

Bought our new 5th Wheel a couple weeks ago in preparation for going full time and also signed up with Good Sam Alert for any recalls. As soon as I had signed up I got a notice on a recall for my trailer awning that had been issued 2 weeks prior to taking delivery of our new trailer. This leaves me a little dismayed in that, one - the dealership didn't know anything about the recall or failed to inform us; two - the awning manufacturer and the RV manufacturer didn't inform us of the recall. Now we are sitting with a defective awning and if we need to travel we will have to go through a procedure that basically ruins the awning so that it can be secured with tie wraps preventing it from unfurling when going down the road. A week into this situation and we are still waiting on the awning manufacturer to get a mobile RV repair service to come out and fix the problem. My recommendation to everyone is to sign up for a recall alert or to check for any recalls on your RV. Although this is a real pain to take care of it beats what could have possibly happened if we were on the road and the awning unfurled.
  • Welcome to the forum. I see no room for complaint. Recalls are often issued and then those who should be in the loop are brought up to speed. Wrap some industrial velcro around the thing and go. That way you can use it and be sure it won't unfurl while in transit.
  • Unfortunately this is exactly how recalls are handled even with car dealerships (with a few exceptions). They don't perform the recall until someone buys it.
    Never made sense to me.
  • Awnings have always unfurled. Our first experience was in 1977. A passing motorist notified us with horns honking and vivid facial expressions.

There are ways to prevent this. Google it.
  • Despite what has been said here, you are advised by Dometic "NOT TO MOVE THE UNIT". You really have no choice but to await the repair in place by a mobile tech supplied by Dometic. If you tie it, strap it or whatever to secure it and then move it, you become liable for any damage that may incur to yourself, your unit or anybody else if it unfurls on the road.

This has been covered before on this and other forums when the recall was announced several weeks ago. I am surprised that your wait has been so long. Dometic has generally been pretty responsive to this matter.

Hang in there(no pun intended)and you will have a nice new motor for you awning.

  • Check with Dometic at 888-447-0003 and give them your model number and serial number and they will tell you if it is recalled. My model number started with 916 and they told me it is not in the recall.

Even though mine is not in the recall I am going to put Velcro straps around the arms just for added security.
