Roadside assistance

Here is why I ask. I have GS, broke down 35 miles south of flagstaff Az, 33 miles back was a small Indian Reservation town called Cameron. GS wanted to tow me to Cameron because it was closer. Problem was you would have to 6 miles south to get another exit then 6 miles back..now I'm no math wizz but that's 10 miles farther. It cost me $214.00 to go where I wanted. Tow driver also stated GS is pretty slow in paying the tow bills. Next time getting ready to pull out DW notices Truck tire going down. I call GS, we will send someone right out.. 1 hr passes, he's on his way.. 2 hr passes he's still on his way.. 3 hr passed (you guess it) still not here.

Finally after 3hr 19 min. He calls and wants me to measure between the top of the tire and the fenderwell..I won't bore you with all the conversation. But this idiot shows up with no jack, only a 4-way lug wrench. By now I'm well into hour #4 and have had more than enough. I words I can't use here, (which would make for a better story) I kicked them out because they could not do the job. Then GS calls and says "so we hear you refused service". It's now 10:30 pm, and I lost it. I used the words that I can't on here and had the lady on the other end speechless. In the end I apologized to her because it was not her fault. She understood and said she would put them on the don't call list..

There was a lot more that went on between me and the idiot they sent out..I think back and have to laugh.
  • Coach Net could not find a service technician for me on a Weekday Morning in August on Highway 101 in Washington within 30 miles of Port Angeles. They would not be able to send a tow until the following day. I found my own technician through the campground, CoachNet had called him but they would only pay $50 for a service call, he charges $75. I dropped Coach Net and now have Good Sam. One call for a flat on the car, no problem so far.
  • I have used Good Sam ERS 5 times that I can think of. Have had good service each time! Am I just lucky??
Anyhow I will stick with them till I am not satisfied!

I am not so sure...The way I read the coach net rules they are more restrictive than GSC.

In addition when I posed the same question to both about being on the Alaska Hiway with no telephone service to make the pre call for service and then still expecting reimbursement Coach net failed that test.

But what is true is that there are few tow companies/tire companies in any given area outside of major cities that do heavy vehicles and all the "Clubs" are pretty much stuck with the same ones (under different contracts for sure)

But one thing I am sure of is that the tow companies are going to service the "Full Price" customers first and leave the discount "Club" customers for later if they are busy. This is what I think the issue really is.
  • I always had very good service from Coachnet. Used their service 2 or 3 times.

    As "dalenoel" stated -
the tow operator may have contracts with GS, CN, Allstate, AAA, etc.

    Soooooo -
you get the *same* tow operator no matter which Motor Club you have.

BTW - after an hour's wait, I would either:
    perform my own repairs -or-
call a tow operator of my own choosing......pay up and hope for reimbursement from the ERS.
(Also, when that tow op comes out - he either performs or leaves empty handed!)

If no luck on the reimbursement, time for a different ERS.

IMO - that would be "US Rider".
Only ERS that will tow trailers with live animals!

Hay burners (horses) can't wait hours and hours - and you *do not* have to own horses or be towing a horse trailer for ERS..;)

  • The only bizarre problem I had with GS road side service was a blow out and they came out to put the spare on. I figured I didn't need to stand there and watch him so I went for a cup of coffee at the truck stop.

Came back, work done. I had a round tire on the MH so I "thought" all was well. signed the paper and pulled the MH around for some gas.

Got out to fill it up and noticed the dreaded blue stuff running from under the coach. I opened my bay and it looked like a spaghetti war. All my valves and pipes were twisted and shredded.

Apparently the blown tire had gone thru the side of the sewage bay destroying everything including the side and floor of the bay itself.

There was no way the service guy replacing my tire could have missed that when he was under the wheel well. You'd think he could have told me!
  • Haven't had to use them but glad to hear Coachnet is better for some. I've got them and will keep them until I need and they don't perform.

I also know that all companies call the same tow companies so it actually can happen to all of them.
