Sewer Donut

If a CG says a sewer donut is required, what do theY mean? Amazon has a "sewer seal" which was what I thought they meant but went to RV Supply store today & they didn't have one. They only had a sewer elbow connection. Will this wok for what CG requires? We don't usually use full hookups this my lack of knowledge! TIA

I carried a donut for a few years. Still new in the package when I threw it out. Just use an elbow fitting as shown above and you are good to go. Worst case buy it from their store on demand.

Most all camping stores will have it. Some Walmarts have RV supplies.

It has been my experience, that if a CG requires it, they have them for sale.

and fwiw it's been my experience that as long as you don't just dangle the end of the sewer hose into the hole you won't be bothered. we don't have a 'sewer donut' but we do make sure we have a sealed connection using the item below. in 28-seasons we've not been asked to use the donut. as long as you use something designed for the purpose you should be OK.

you can also minimize leaking odors throughout the CG by leaving your tank valves closed until ready to dump.

We also carry a donut, but have never been required to use it.

I also carry a couple of smooth PVC to thread adapters with me. I have one for Schedule 40 PVC and one for Schedule 20 PVC. I also carry a doughnut but haven't used it. Most of the sewer connections are threaded already or my adapter works.

I've seen people just plop a cheap sewer hose down the hole... result is usually quite smelly with a nice backflow, especially if the hose is well jammed in there that the sewage can't flow down the pipe.

I've had quite good luck with the screw-on fittings. I use that, and have no leaks, no mess.

It's not just campgrounds that make the seals mandatory. Some state or local laws also mandate it.

Yup if you don't have the elbow connection for your sewer hose the CG will gladly let you buy the sewer donut from their little store.

That said some CG's do not have a sewer connection that you can tightly screw the elbow connection into. Then you DO have to have the donut.

I carry one with me even though I have the threaded elbow connection for sewer connections that are not the right size or not threaded.

There is nothing as bad as being parked next to someone that just opens the sewer pipe and throws the hose in letting sewer smells emit all over the place and smells even worse when they go to dump.

I appreciate CG's that make it mandatory to have the elbow connection or make you buy one of their donuts! :C

We also used a donut around our sewer hose at the RV connection area. Our hose fed up through a large hole and then connected to the dump valve. That large hole was a perfect place for critters to enter.

We sliced the donut on one side so we could wrap it around the hose & fit it into the hole opening. A small gap was left and we jammed it with a piece of steel wool. No more critters!

The doughnut is required for a tight seal to keep rainwater out and smells in.
If you use an lose fitting, unthreaded elbow you still need a doughnut.

A sewer hose like this will work in the majority of the locations. It screws into the connection point.

Buy the size you need before you go. Invariably the store at the campground does not have the right size in stock. We've got two or three from a long time, that are all wrong sized, in the bay.

I agree about the elbow. My hose has an elbow with three different size diameter threads on it. I have found that it will almost always securely fit sewer dump pipes even if those dump pipes are not threaded. I do have a donut for the odd case.

Campgrounds just don't want people dropping a hose into the dump pipe without some seal to hold in the odors.

The uses for the donut were very well covered.

An elbow can be used without the donut - and frequently it is.

Some folks will put a weight of some kind on top of the elbow to make sure it stays where it belongs.

Some *campgrounds* are requiring a *threaded* elbow - although most do not. - (Never saw an employee checking sewer connections, LOL!

Even if you only boondock, you will usually need/want an elbow at the dump station - not really necessary.....but "handy".

BTW - a "Y" connection is to connect *two* 3" sewer lines into *one*.
Some folks with two (remote from each other) separate tanks (usually with rear kitchens, or 2 bathrooms) will want to do that - but even then, a 3" 'Y' is not necessary.

Happy dumping..;)
