Smart Car Trailer Towing

Smart Car Trailer.
We recently purchased a Smart Car for around town use. We decided to take it on the road as our toad. The problem was how to tow, 4 on the road, front dolly, or trailer. After looking into it we decided to go with a trailer. We didn’t want to put a lot of wear & tear on such a small vehicle. The Smart Car can be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground, requiring a tow bar assemble & break controller, etc. The cost of outfitting our tow vehicle (The Tardis) and the Smart Car with all necessary equipment was more than the cost of a trailer built specifically to handle the Smart Car. I contacted “Smart Trailer USA” and found that the owner had retired & closed the business. He gave me a contact at “Texas Trailers” where he had the trailers built for his business. I contacted them and they produced the same trailer for us. We picked it up on our way back from a trip to Florida. It is ideal for our use & you can back it up when needed, which can’t be done with 4 wheels on the road. There is no wear & tear on the Smart Car when being dragged across country, something to be considered. Consider this as an option on your toad…

    It's you. They have a 16,000+ lb triple axle 5th wheel. I don't want to be in a campground and having to listen to a tractor being used as a daily driver. It would get really annoying, really fast. I've seen a Jeep behind a tractor. I've seen a PT Cruiser sideways across a tractor. I for one am glad that they have a toad to run errands and day trips with.

    No it is not collapsible. The ramps are stowed on each side and slide out for loading & unloading. They are pined in place when stowed & only slide out to a fixed position. Our RV "The Tardis" is a two person vehicle (my wife & I). We like it that way. The Smart Car is perfect for us. You could erect a dinning tent on the trailer platform if you needed extra space. Texas Trailers makes all types of trailers for almost every application. Contact them and explain your needs, they might be able to help...

    However, most folks need much more room and seating capacity in their towed vehicles than the smart cars provide. Many of us need to be able to seat 4-5 people (comfortably!) That pretty well rules the smart car out.

    If Texas Trailers would make a collapsible trailer that could handle regular size cars and still fold up so its out of the way at your campsite..I'd order one TODAY, and put all my 4 down towing equipment (towbar) up for sale. Definitely a lot to be said for the ability to back up when towing.
