Tire question

Just to update everyone, after much research I found a perfect tire for my needs. With a lot of help from a fellow rv.net member, I must add.

I really wanted to go with LT/P as it just makes way more sense TO ME... not trying to start a war here. I strongly considered Maxxis (ST), but after careful consideration, I decided on Goodyear G26 tires.

I chose them for a variety of reasons. First of all, I realized that I have a 5 inch rim, and not 5.5 or 6. This really limited my options when going to a bigger tire obviously, so the next best thing was the G26. I currently have Maxxis 205/75/15 C load.. max load 1650ish I believe.

The G26 is now going on the same 15 inch rim, and is 195/70/15 with a load rating of 1950ish. Much better choice for me, and now I won't be so worried when I travel on 70 MPH interstate highways... not saying I will be going 70, but at least it relieves some of the stress off of me.

Just ordered off of tirerack, and I will be picking them up later this month. No rush since I'm in Canada, and we still have snow here!

After much debate and research and endless rehash of the tire choice threads :
If you want the best and safest 15 inch tire for a travel trailer regardless of cost it is:
Goodyear Cargo G26 in a 225/70R16 load range D tire .
It fits everywhere a 15 inch ST tire size 225/75R15C fits .
It has an 2470 # rating on the toughest scale the LT scale .
The ST scale is a less stringent scale .
The G26 is speed rated at 106 mph .
Any ST is only 65 mph .
The G26 is not made in asia .
All ST tires originate in Asia .
A 225/70R15 G26 is simply more tire than any ST225/75R15 tire .
And you don't have to buy new wheels .

Who said the Mod doesn't like Maxxis tires? I run them on my own trailer and have for several years. I just don't like the same people coming on here and hyjacking a discussion with a debate about Maxxis vs other tires. That road has been traveled too many times and the same people keep traveling it.

Good Year cargo G26 might be a good choice for you. LR D, in two different 15" sizes available. It would be good to know the width of your rims.

Ok this is all so helpful. Who knew that getting tires would be so damn confusing. I am not a fan of this at all. I just want the safest and best tire, regardless of cost.

So my last question is this... I KNOW there is a thread about this already, but I just can't wrap my head around all the friggin details, and tire types.

If I stay with ST tires, would changing from C to D load make any difference? Like would it be safer? would the wheel handle it? change ride? etc? Like I said, I guess I have 3 options... exact same tire but new... ST 205/75R15 C Load, LT tire as suggested above by poster, or going with ST 205/75R15 D Load. I know for sure I am getting Maxxis if I go ST, that's one thing I do know. Thanks again.

EDIT: Based on Maxxis website C load is around 1650 lbs, and D load is 2100(ish) lbs. Since my TT weight is max 3500, wouldn't D load be safer? I don't get why I would have C load on there currently since simple math states that I must be over that weight per tire... no?? What am I missing?

You are missing that not all of that 3500# is carried BG the wheels. Some of it is tongue weight but that still puts you close. I would move up a range and I still like the Maxxis tires even if the mod doesn't.

I like this idea...just need to verify the wheels can handle the d load...I guess?

If you are going to roll your own I recommend you look at the tire load rating to verify it will cover the full trailer GVWR.

Actually, it probably does not need to be as confusing as you may think. Here's a few of the things I look for when considering tires:

Can I get a tire that has not only adequate load carry capacity, but in fact, "extra" ( reserve ) capacity, in the size I need for the rims, and whatever clearance issues I may have ?

Can I get a tire that has reserve speed rating ?

Does the tire company also provide tires to the OEM auto manufacturers ? The reason I want to know that is simply a general feeling the company has a reputation for quality. OEM auto companies vet these suppliers and ensure their factories and workers are certified and trained to higher ISO standards, so this at least suggests that we might expect a more reliable and trouble free product from them.

In my case, it has come down to personally using LT tires on all my trailers. Yes they cost more to buy initially, but their longer potential lifespan vs ST tires offsets the higher purchase price.
