To the good samaritan on I-29 in South Dakota yesterday

We had a great weekend camping with friends and my father this past weekend. My mother was not able to join us as she stayed in the hospital with my grandfather who had a heart attack Friday morning. Well Sunday morning we packed up early (started inside before quiet time expired. First out of the CG (which is a first for us) and headed to my hometown about 50 miles away to drop the TT and go visit grandpa. Well, good visit with him. We hooked up and headed south for our 100 mile trek home. Got a few miles down the interstate and noticed the TT was swaying slightly on a day when the wind was 0-5mph. Got to the first exit and pulled off to check hookup. Had the chains a link off and the free hanging links were bound up between the tense links and the A-frame of trailer. So I jacked her down and reset. While doing this another gentleman with his 5er pulled off to see if we needed any assistance. I shook his hand and thanked him and said that we were good.

Thank you to you sir whoever you are. It is always nice to be reminded of how neighborly RVers truly are.

my wife's family has been in the Estelline area since the 1880's .... we spend 2 - 3 months out there in our camper every summer .... sure hate it that we are on our way back to the heat and humidity of NC

  • If you decide to be a Good Samaritan though, PLEASE use some common sense!

On our way back from Ohio yesterday pick up our "new" (and first!) RV, we could see in the distance a 5th-wheel pulled over on the right shoulder with someone along the drivers side (between the truck and the right lane of traffic!) fiddling with something. Folks slowed down for the most part, some got over to give room. One guy in the left lane I guess thought he would be the hero and stop to help, and did a panic stop into one of the emergency crossovers that happened to be there. This nearly set off a multi-car accident and the other vehicles in the lane reacted. A couple ended up diving for the shoulder even.

As for the original trailer stopped - as soon as we got up on it we could see the fuel nozzle from the bed mounted tank in use, transferring fuel. Pretty sure he didn't need help.

The message here? Don't make the situation worse! Swooping in the lend a hand sure isn't worth it if you end up causing an accident in the process. There was no fire (or smoke) making it a life or death situation, but it almost turned into on in the process.

for the last couple of months we were camped about 70 miles north of Sioux Falls at the Estelline City CG .... day before yesterday when we were hooking up getting ready to head down I-29, my wife lost her camper keys .... after about 30 minutes of looking we asked the lady on the site next to us to keep any eye out for them .... later that evening we were setup in St Joseph, MO we got word the neighbor had found the keys, turned them over to the lady who runs the city office, who called and gave them to my wife's sister-in-law .... they are now in the mail on the way to us .... South Dakota folks are special and small town USA is hard to beat
