- tatestExplorer III would have felt the extra drag immediately, it makes the steering pull strongly to one side with my rig. I know because I did it once, in the campground, after starting to unhook then changing my mind about the campsite and moving to another.
Quite possibly with a very heavy, very powerful motorhome and lightweight towed vehicle, it could truly be "don't feel it back there at all." - 2gypsies1Explorer IIISince the tire wasn't rotating the flat part was always on the ground and it blended in with the pavement. We didn't even notice it when unhooking after 200 miles. However, getting into it and driving it to the campsite it went thump, thump so that's when we knew something was wrong.
- RobocopExplorerI loved all the witty and informed reparte here. Lists are great but getting distracted in the middle of the checking of/off the list does not help either. I cannot imagine anyone driving 200 miles with a blown tire and not noticing the ramifications. Heck, I forget to latch a small cargo door and I have several people honking and waving at me in less than a minute.
- CroweExplorer2Gypsies, the same thing happened to us with our Wrangler. The fortunate thing was my hubby has a remarkable sixth sense when towing plus we had to take a corner and were able to see what was happening. It was only a few miles but the tire was destroyed. We were in Canada and it cost us a fortune to replace it but such is life.
Anyone of us can err. Doing so makes us human. Admitting so makes us honest. - 2gypsies1Explorer IIIO.K. I'll fess up. :o
When we first got our set-up of motorhome and Jeep, we hooked it up but got the key in the wrong position causing the Jeep steering wheel to lock up. We drug the Jeep around 200 miles and did not know it.
No one waved us down to let us know of a problem. We could not feel any difference in towing. We could not see the tire with the rear monitor.
The tire was worn flat but no fire, thankfully. We made sure that it never happened again. We checked and double-checked the key position before towing.
Whew! Glad to get it out in the open. :W - PastorCharlieExplorerIts interesting that only the top of the tire slid and not the bottom part that sits on the road. :B
- OkSixpackExplorerThe first thing that comes to my mind is how they drove that far without someone getting them to stop before it got that bad.
Jim - chracatoaExplorerIn the original link (not sure if I can post it here - reddit) the guy who was called to tow the toad after that took the pictures. According to him, it was an elderly couple doing their first RV trip and they dragged it for 200 miles.
Here's the tire: - BobboExplorer II

Apparently the guilty party never looks in their mirrors either. That tire would have been smoking for a long while before the wheel started dragging. After the tire was gone there probably would have been sparks as metal bits were hitting the pavement. The wheel itself probably wouldn't spark.
If it had been my rig, I would not have been able to see the toad in the mirrors. It is only visible on a fairly sharp turn. I have to rely on the rear view camera to see the toad. - 4X4DodgerExplorer II

Thanks for proving at least ONE of my points! :B
But the fact is people often dont want to hear the truth.
Then just leave them alone, unless they are putting you or someone else in danger.
When you jump to conclusions you often find you were standing at the cliffs edge. The fact is we dont KNOW what was towing that car.
There is a huge difference between someone who comes to this site to get help with something that they have no knowledge of and a post of someone who is clearly trying to get a chorus of; "Awwwww too bad" when they have clearly done something beyond the pale. This represents one of those cases.
If they post something like this only to get a chorus of mourners then yes they deserve to hear the truth. But if you will notice my post names no one and it's language is general and can be applied to anyone. On purpose. It's not personal.
As for danger? If what happened to this car doesnt represent a dangerous situation on the road then I dont know what does. It could have resulted in the car losing a wheel, catching on fire, breaking loose from its tow...any number of things.
