tow vehicle 4 wheels down for ace 30.1

We have a 2014 ace 30.2 as nd looking for a tow vehicles four wheels down. Really want a pickup or jeep. Any ideas on what size pickup would work? I believe the tow limit is 5000 lbs.
  • Thank to all for the advice. I guess I just want a pickup truck! Our second choice would be a jeep wrangler but not sure about the 2 dooor or 4 door 4wd. Anyone tow these with an Ace 30.1? My husband just thinks I want a big pickup...which I do. Love this forum and any suggestions of vehicles to tow 4 wheels down is appreciated...
  • I owned a 2013 ace 30.1, and towed a 2010 jeep liberty (very easy to set up) and towed itfor 2 years and 2 criss ciuntry trips with no problems, good luck.

    OP - You're a new member so

First, Welcome! This is a great family of forums and members.

Next, I've been here a dozen years or so, and I can tell you Tom is one of the members you can count on for a considered and long view of things.

My own experience - Yes, lighter IS better. We've had toads weighing 2000, 2500 and 3800 pounds. 3800 is the newest one and I just equipped our 2500 for towing to get back to lighter.

I understand where some need to transport a family. Some need to adapt an existing vehicle to meet a budget. Some simply MUST have 4x4.

Cars like FIT are wonderful daily drivers. If you need to run in snow, Subarus are simply the Best, but have to be manual transmission to tow. A great compromise sits in the Honda CR-V, but the automatic canNOT be the new CVT, so you're looking for late model used. Some are AWD and still towable.

Then, if you want 4x4, want to look and actually BE sporty, don't care about space inside, there's only one: JEEP WRANGLER.
  • For a few years I pulled a manual transmission regular-cab Ford Ranger, my 2001 was a bit over 3600 pounds on the scales. The lightest configurations of full size pickups (e.q. regular cab short bed work truck) might be under 5000, the configurations most popular today tend to be heavier.

The truck pulled fairly well up to about 60 MPH (Ford said 55), any faster I think it might need adjustments to alignment or steering geometry to track better on tight curves. That might be specfic to Rangers from that era with the lifted suspension, 4x4 or Edge, or it might have to do with getting into a rig geometry where the tow is trying to push the rear of the RV to the outside of the curve.

After my wife died, I gave her mid-size car to one of the kids and bought a Honda Fit to tow. 1000 pounds lighter, more stable tracking around curves, the small car is a nicer tow.
