trailer brake issues

Hey guys new to this forum. So first off hello.

I have a 2006 shadowmaster trailer for towing my motorcycles. My trailer brakes randomly stopped working. I have checked all fuses and connections and I replaced the battery on the trailer. However they are still not working. On the brake controller the green light will sometimes come on and when you hit the brakes the light will blink red for a few seconds and go off but the brakes never worked. I don't know if it is just a faulty brake controller bu I appreciate any help you can give thank you
  • What kind of controller do you have. I bet the flashing red would indicate something in the manual.
  • An intermittent and semi-effective problem like yours with an electrical system is almost always a wiring/connection problem. Shorts due to damaged insulation on wires, corroded or loose connectors can be hard to track down, but fairly cheap to fix, once you find the problem. Keep looking, you know it's in there somewhere.
  • Do the brake wires go inside the axle? This is another weak spot as the insulation will wear off and cause a intermittent short. The solution is to run a new wire outside the axle.
  • The last time I had a trailer brake problem it was a brake wire with insulation worn through in one of the wheel/brake housings. As the wheel rotated, the wire intermittently was making contact and grounding out. The problem went away when I moved the wire from where it was rubbing and covered the bare spot with electrical tape.
