Unexpected repair

I was on the roof last week giving the a/c unit its yearly once over (how else can this be done without getting up there, right?) and gave myself a nice little surprise.
Since I was so close to the skylight by the unit I was checking the lap sealant around it as well. I noticed what looked like a few small gaps and was wondering if I needed to fill them in. I was kneeling on the plywood I brought up with me and I went to turn around so I put my hands down to support myself and I inadvertently put a hand on one of the vent stacks. Since it has been in the sun and weather for four years it was brittle and I crushed it with my weight....
I just sat there stunned at my stupid mistake. Could I rig this somehow so I don’t have to drop everything and go buy this part? Sorry, not this time. It was damaged WAY beyond repair.
Off to the RV dealer I went and purchased a new cover and my first tube of lap sealant. I had the parts guy give me a quick primer since I had never done this before.
I got back and the process went much easier than I could have imagined. Normally in a case like this everything would have blown up in my face and I would have needed to replace the entire roof! I filled the cracks around the skylight too.
All I can say is be careful where you step if you’re not on plywood and be careful where you put your hands!
  • Could also Platsti Dip your stuff. Only $6 a can at Ome Depot or Lowes. Put a few coats on...easy to peel and replace when needed...

  • I did the same thing with my baked fridge vent cover and on another TT, the AC cover. They were both like leaning on a egg shell. I busted them before I could even react.

All of my vent caps just fell apart by themselves. Instead of replacing with something that will fall apart again, I took 3 aluminum cat food cans, drilled a single hole in the center, then bolted those caps which I painted white to the spring steel piece that fits into the stack. They stay put while traveling and will not sun bake and fall apart.

    Wow sweet tip there...^^^

I found metal replacements at the trailer supply place here for a coupla bucks.
Painted them with Rustoleum vinyl coat white.
Vinyl coat seems to last for a long time and slows down suns effects.
