Unexpected tire damage

THanks all, for the helpful replies. I purchased the used 5th wheel about a year ago, from Camping World. As part of the purchase, I asked them to replace the tires, which they did, but most likely put the cheapest quality tires on they could find.

If its a tread separation there is a good chance the others are not far behind or at least that has been my experience.

At some point on the last homeward bound 300 mile leg of a trip, I picked up a large spike in the right rear inside dually. Didn't even notice it until the day after I got home when checking the air pressures. I know I was lucky. I replaced both tires on that side.
After that, I had a TPMS installed, and I carry an inflated spare in the storage compartment. To make room, I removed the giant tool box and replaced it with a small fishing tackle box that contains Phillips and slotted screwdrivers, an easement tool (hammer) and a Good Sam roadside assistance card. Those are the only tools I know how to use anyway.

"CMunrock"......Your tire has a tread separation. A section of the tread separated from the tire carcass and air got in between. Once this occurs, the tire wears more quickly there, causing what you see.

The tire is junk and is highly likely to explode if used again. The separation can be caused by a bad quality tire or a sharp strike to the tire in that area, such as a pothole. You should always be careful how you park your trailer as not to stress the tire.

If the tire went bad, it is likely that the others will too. You should have them inspected. That typically involves lifting the trailer or removing the wheel so that it can be rolled and inspected on all sides.

More like the tread in that area separated from the plies underneath. As the tire spun this detached portion slung out further than the rest and was worn down.

The separation (bubble) is the damage. It caused the accelerated tread wear, which was the symptom.

It happens. I'd just be glad you caught it before it blew.

Inspected it more closely and the worn spot is about 2" by 10". It's the outer strip of tread and it's clearly bowing upward just inside that strip. Not sure if the bubble is causing the damage or if the damage caused the bubbles.
