Volunteer at Crawford State Park in Colorado - Solved Closed

Has anyone ever volunteered at Crawford State Park in Colorado? I'm particularly interested in how it is to work as a Camp Host or ANS there. Working conditions, how many hours, the area near here, etc.

Any one have any ideas on the best route to get to Crawford from the south east? Will be coming out of Florida, through Memphis (to see family). I'm particularly interested in going from I25 north. MS Streets and trips routes me on SR 69 to US 50, then catch SR 92 north of Crawford and head south (Catching SR 92 south of Crawford goes through about 20 miles of wild, rough, difficult and sometimes bad roads) I am driving a 45 foot DP with toad. Wondering if the 100 miles extra out of Denver is worth taking rather than 69 to 50???

This looks like beautiful country but I'm concerned about the roads we will be traveling. Comments please.
  • Thanks for the great info. Between here and elsewhere all my questions have been answered. Thanks to everyone for looking.
  • I already have the Mountain Directory Combined (East and West). It does not speak highly of the southern end of 92. We have a 45 foot coach with a Jeep toad. I believe I will probably choose the long way around the first time. I can then check out 92 with the Jeep before attempting with the coach. I'm pretty good driving the coach (used to drive tractor trailers) but would really prefer checking the curvy route with the jeep the first time.

Thank you for all the great info. We did accept the volunteer camp host positions today starting in mid May through Labor Day. Really looking forward to it.
  • 69 to 50 is an easy drive. Then you'll head west on 50 and do Monarch Pass. With your rig it will be a good drive. Continuing 50 west is very easy. When you get to 92 and north to Crawford it is a two-lane very curvy road but no hills. It follows the curve of the river. Or...you can continue on 50 west to Montrose and head north to Delta, than east on 92 to Hotchkiss and 92 south to Crawford. That northern end of 92 isn't as curvy as the southern end. We've driven all those roads with our 40' motorhome.

You might want to pick up a copy of the Mountain Directory - West (it comes in East, also). We use it all the time even though we love traveling the western mountains and it's a good refresher when doing those roads over again.

Crawford State Park is in a beautiful setting but your major city is Montrose. The smaller towns have very adequate grocery stores though. That area is on the warm side in the summer so I hope your site has a tree!
  • Highway 92, which starts at the dam for Blue Mesa reservoir, is the short cut from the Gunnison area to that area, and it is now a paved road. Sure, it goes through some back country, but it's a fine road. Just take it slow; the drop-offs down into the Black Canyon are rather steep.

Your alternative, the long way, is to continue on Hwy 50 all the way into Montrose, then back up to Delta and on to Hotchkiss, where you'd head for Crawford. Even if you crawled along Hwy 92, it'd still be faster than going the long way.

Of course, I'm assuming that you're planning this for warm season, not wintertime.

    :)

The best way to get those questions is to ask the volunteer coordinator at the park where you will be working. Often, the terms and conditions are put in writing with both parties signing. You are applying for a job, treat it like one.
