Crawford SP, KS

Thinking about spending two nights at Crawford SP, KS on our way to OK and onward, mid April. Is any one familiar with this park and/or the area, as to what it has to offer in ways of scenery, history, local eateries or general things to do and see? Peace & quiet also works.
  • Big Brutus , an old retired shovel from the strip mine days is about 25 miles south. It was the third largest in the world when it was working in the 60's.

If you drop down to 400 and go east to 69 Chicken Annie's will be a quarter mile north. German recipe fried chicken. MMMmmmmmmmm.
  • I grew up in Columbus and remember a grade school field trip to stand on the rim of the pit and watch Big Brutus in action the first year it was in operation. The red head girl and I are actually planning a trip to take the grandkids to see it this summer.
  • I grew up in Riverton. My dad was switchboard operator at the power plant. He could tell when Brutus was turning by watching one of the gauges. I think he said it pulled 3 megawatts.
