WDH angle?

I would like to get more tension onto my wdh, but if I go an entire link I'll be at 5 and the bar will be very very close to the frame.
Can I get more wd using the same 6 links if I angle the ball one way or the other? I can add washers if needed to angle the ball down away from the tow vehicle. Or should I take any current washers out and even the ball up as much as possible?
  • I went from 3 washers to 5 washers on mine, and the weight transferred to the front axle went from 60-120 lbs. to 260 lbs. The bars on mine are parallel with the trailer tongue using 7 links.

  • Adding washers and head tilt is the proper way of getting the bars where you want them. You try to get the bars at the proper weight distribution with at least 5 links under tension (more is better).

Using less than 5 links risks the chains dragging the snap-up brackets on the a frame or the chain hitting the brackets during turns. Also, if the bars are slanted upwards in the rear, they can crash into the frame.

Try putting enough washers on the pin to allow you to get the proper weight distribution you need with at least 5 chain links under tension. It that is enough then tighten everything up and you are good to go. If not, then tilt the head a bit more, add another washer, and try again. It is kind of a trial and error thing and cannot usually be done on the first try.

If you have not seen it already, I suggest you might want to check out this thread carefully. It will probably give you some help.
    Good luck.

  • When we had our Work & Play, I had to add the full 8 washers to our Equalizer to get it set up correctly. 8 is the max. recommended. After that, it worked perfectly. LOTS of tension but outstanding WD and sway control.

You add washers. On my brophy hitch I have 7. It says a max of 8 can be used.

adding washers tilts the bars towards the ground more, this way when you link up you get more tension and the bars stay parrlel to the frame...

Thanks. That's what suspected and that's how I had it previously. When we got our new trailer the guy at the dealer removed a few washers. I'll probably put them back. I like plenty of tension but don't want to get too close to the frame.

Not sure how many washers are allowed or even that the ones I have are uniform in size but the way I used to have it seemed to work well.
