What is this world coming to?

I just got back from a trip to the Great North West. I visited my dad after 16 years of not traveling up his way. He's been down a few times and we've been in touch on the phone and on the internet. It was a great visit, we had a wonderful time!

My question though at the opening, we visited a Rite Aid to pick up some ice cream and wouldn't you know it. They don't have Thrifty Ice cream! What!!! That is some of the best, award winning ice cream in the world and they don't have it! How disappointing is that? Well, I did find another good one that I haven't seen at home in San Diego, Tillamook. I've heard of the cheese, I didn't know they made ice cream too? I learned something new!

Never heard of most of these. Have had Giffords before and it is ok. Ben and Jerry's is the best though, could go for a pint right about now.

i didn't believe this so i just went to our Rite Aid in Napa, Calif.
they still have an ice cream counter with Thrifty ice cream and still sell boxed Thrifty ice cream in the freezer.

i had a double scoop cone of Pecan Praline, for $2.50:B

maybe it's something with the SoCal Rite Aids.:h

Here's another Texan vote for Blue Bell made locally in Brenham, TX! As a matter of fact we're going to take the factory tour in a few weeks so we can get down on one knee and pay homage to the best ice cream anywhere.

anyplace that makes soft serve using the old vintage machines that are no longer made that create a dense, high butterfat soft serve, instead of this new air filled stuff being passed off as ice cream...

You have to go back 'some' for that trivia!

When Thrifty Drug was in So.CA, the chain had something like 200 stores.
Sav-On had 20 (1960s) and did more volume than Thrifty's 200! (probably why Thrifty was sold).

Both were long before discount stores - like Zody's, K-Mart, etc. came on the scene, but Sav-On had 'discount' prices - and a better stocking plan.
Each store was it's own warehouse - while Thrifty kept minimal stock in the stores, relied on a central warehouse - resulting in 'outages' on the store shelves.

Like Thrifty, all Sav-On stores had an ice cream counter (hand-dipped), and like Thrifty - it was *not* their own brand.
(Sav-On was Carnation, forgot who supplied Thrifty).
Sav-On would have two or three gals (always busy) working at the ice cream counter during business hours, selling cones, hand-packed qts & 1/2 gallons - as well as 'commercially' packaged 1/2 gallons.

Single was 5 cents, double 10 cents. Thrifty would do "triples", but not Sav-On. (too many clean-ups).

When the younger generation of the Call family inherited the family business, they weren't interested in running a drug store chain and sold Sav-On also - and has been re-sold several times since.
Most of those stores are now CVS.

Doesn't matter - the ice cream counters have all disappeared.
The 'foot traffic' - won't support it.
Doubt a CVS (or a Rite Aid) could sell five cones in an hour - no matter what brand it was, LOL!

We like Umqua ice cream, and as some brands have done, they haven't reduced the size of the 1/2 gallon as much as others, you get 1.75 quarts. Don't know of any store brand that has a full 1/2 gallon (2.0 quarts) anymore. And there is a Popeye's in Burlington WA for those that need some fried chicken.

There are two Popeye's that I'm aware of in the Northwest. You have to come down to Vancouver, WA or Portland, OR. ๐Ÿ™‚

We have one in Boise also:

Just did a location search on their website and they are well established in the Pacific NW.

Gifford Ice Cream is a great ice cream. Its made up in Maine. We sell it in the Ice Cream Parlor here at the campground.

Gifford is great ice cream for sure, but it is NOT as good as Houlton Farms Dairy ice cream. If in northern Maine it is a must try before leaving. You won't be sorry for taking the time to sample this yummy local secret.

I suspect most ice cream is fairly local to the plant or plants where its made. Probably the cost to ship it frozen would price you out of the market.
Graeter's in Cincinnati has stores in Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville and Lexington. All within 100 miles. It would be worth the drive for me if there wasn't a Graeter's about 6 blocks from home. ๐Ÿ™‚

When I read the title of thread and then the mention of not going to visit your dad for 16 years I wondered what this was going to be about?

And its about ice cream.. :h

It is a 16 hr trip one way to where my Dad lived and I made sure I got there at least once a year.
Don't have to any more since he passed a year ago January.

Make sure you "make" the time to do a yearly trip from now on,
you won't regret it. :W
Even without your favorite ice cream.. ๐Ÿ™‚

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. That's the idea though. He's been down a few times and we've been in touch all the time on the phone. We email occasionally but he doesn't like to email because he doesn't type real well. He's a "hunter pecker" and it takes him too long to reply so he'd just rather talk on the phone.

He's in his mid 70's and in good health but very much in touch with his mortality, he mentions it more than I think he needs too but I think he is just being real. Anyway, that is a topic for another thread. Our visit was great, I got my love for ice cream honestly. It must be genetic.
